Jerónimos Monastery

The Jerónimos Monastery is located in the Belém district. This grand white building is a prominent landmark of this port city. Together with the Church of the Knights of Santa Maria connected to it, it is the pinnacle of human medieval architecture. In 1983, it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO together with the nearby Belém Tower. The navigator Vasco da Gama is also buried here. Glorious History The Jerónimos Monastery was built in 1501. It was presided over by King Manuel I to commemorate Vasco da Gama's significant voyage. It took nearly 100 years to build. The door wall connecting the church and the monastery is more than 100 meters long, almost occupying the entire street. This majestic momentum also highlights Portugal's unrivaled maritime dominance in the past.



Berenta is one of Lisbon's must-see attractions, on the seaside of the Beren district. The fortification was built by Manuel I from 1514 to 1520 to commemorate Da Gama's arrival in India and later used as a customs, telegraph station and even lighthouse. The entire building of the Bellen Tower is arranged in an "L" style, with five floors, and the entire tower is made of white marble, a typical Manuel style building: the tower is surrounded by stone ropes, dotted with stone stones, crosses and stone carvings of plants and animals. Among them, the stone-carved rhino on the base is quite striking, built to highlight the achievements of Portuguese navigators exploring overseas. The Bellenta when the sun sets has a unique charm. The oldest Catholic church in Lisbon, located in the middle of the Alfama district of the old town, is behind the site of a Roman theatre, which is being excavated and repaired. It is also well preserved after the Lisbon earthquake! The stained glass inside the church is beautiful!



The entrance ticket allows you to take the lift to the top floor. From there you still have to climb a few flights of stairs to reach the observation deck. The view is nice but it's not the only place in Lisbon where you can get nice views over the Tagus estuary. The museum at the basement is worth a visit if you're interested in how the landscape in Lisbon changed over the years.
