MoreThe former residence of Zhang Shiming, also known as Yide Hall, is a large mansion built by Zhang Junheng, the grandson of Zhang Songxian, a wealthy man in Jiangnan and one of the "Four Elephants" of Nanxun. It is one of the rare mansions in Jiangnan that has basically maintained the original appearance of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is a classic building with a combination of Chinese and Western styles, and is known as "the first private residence in Jiangnan".
Zhang's residence was built along the ancient Xun Creek. It is a five-courtyard house with 150 Chinese and Western-style rooms. Although it is a large house, its appearance is plain and simple. A square doorway is opened on the white high wall, which is the gate of the courtyard. However, after entering the entrance hall, a classical world full of exquisite and delicate decorations appears in front of you. The gatehouse, walls, pillars, frames, rafters, doors and windows are ingeniously conceived and elegant in style. Thousands of stone carvings, wood carvings and brick carvings in the shape of birds, animals and flowers are ready to emerge, and the craftsmanship is so exquisite that it is amazing. They are all sculptures from the late Qing Dynasty. The lattice doors and windows, stained glass and French floor tiles from France add an incomparably romantic European style to the entire Zhang's residence.
The first entrance is the front hall, where the four characters "竹抱松茂" (Bamboo and Pine Growing Prosperously) on the door lintel were written by the famous Wu Gankai; the second entrance is the main hall, where the plaque "Yide Hall" was written by Zhang Jian, the No. 1 Scholar in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, for his mother, at the request of Zhang Shiming, who lost his father at an early age, out of respect and gratitude to his mother; the third entrance is the inner hall, where the corridors and windows on both sides are inlaid with stone-carved banana leaves, which are lifelike; the fourth entrance is a Western-style building and a Western dance hall, where most of the decorative building materials were purchased from France, and the walls are inlaid with colorful porcelain paintings, which are full of Western style; the fifth entrance is the back garden and the stele gallery, which are inlaid with 87 steles with calligraphy works by dozens of famous Chinese calligraphers, from Wang Xizhi of the Eastern Jin Dynasty to He Zhuo of the Qing Dynasty.
It usually takes 1-2 hours to visit the ancient house. After that, you can walk out of the ancient house and wander around Nanxun Ancient Town at your leisure.

One of the four elephants in the south of the late Qing Dynasty and early Minchu, Zhang's long house Zhang Shiming's former residence can be called a model of the combination of east and west. The entire house sits west to east, and the periphery is a traditional Chinese architectural style. It is mainly a typical traditional hall style in the south of the Yangtze River, integrating European Renaissance European architecture. With exquisite brick carvings, wood carvings, stone carvings, glass carvings, you can enjoy the Zhang family collection of Wang Yuzhi, Dong Qichang, Zhao Meng 𫖯 and other calligraphy and painting monuments. In the flower hall, the carved screen of Dong Qichang, a calligrapher of the Ming Dynasty, was displayed. When he looked up, he could see Kang You for the picture book: to suit his ambition. In the study, you can see Wu Changshuo writing the title here: Shi is Ju. Entering the interior hall, the wooden and stone parts of the building are exquisitely carved, and the windows are set with French diamond blue silver hand-painted glass, crystal clear and exquisite craftsmanship. It is said that there are only less than 200 pieces of glass in the world, except for 8 pieces in the Louvre in France, the rest are all in Zhang Shiming's old residence. There is a Yingde stone in the yard, which is shaped like an eagle and so it is called an eagle stone, and is known as the three famous stones in Nanxun. The West Building and the West Ballroom are a combination of Chinese and Western architecture. The facade is mainly in the form of baroque architecture, and the interior and the winding doors and windows have the form of Renaissance architecture. Two octagonal Doric columns outside the porch, the head mimics the Klins column, and the outside gate is made of Roman columns. The balcony upstairs uses iron flower railings from the French Louis period. The relief pattern combines European-style honeysuckle leaves and Chinese grape leaves, peony flowers for decoration. Zhang Shiming's old house, also known as Suidetang. It is located in the ancient Suixi in front of it, facing west and east, covering an area of 6500 square meters, with a construction area of 7,000 square meters, and 150 Chinese and Western buildings. It is a classic building of a combination of Chinese and Western buildings.
It's magnificent, and it still looks like it's not old.
Compared with Zhang's old house, this building is a bit Western-style, and the overall style is somewhat similar to Shanghai's Shikumen bungalow building.
The fun is average. It is possible to take a look for the first time. It used to be a pass, but now it has become a scenic spot to charge once, which is more reasonable. I want to see where to buy tickets.
Very good, it looks great inside
