Best Value: JR Pass Regional Pass

If you're only sticking to one region in Japan, like Kansai, Kyushu, or Tohoku, the regional JR Pass is a really good deal. It's way cheaper than the national pass, you can ride unlimited trains within that area, and it even covers popular shinkansen routes that the nationwide pass doesn't include. Most Popular JR Railway Stations

Japan's JR network spans the entire country, and its main stations are bustling hubs where trains meet shopping, dining, and travel services. Here's a quick guide to help you navigate them like a local.

Popular JR Stations

Tokyo Station

Tokyo Station combines historic red-brick charm with modern convenience. First Avenue is perfect for shopping and dining, and you can easily access JR Pass services or store your luggage while exploring. From here, the Shinkansen connects you to destinations across Japan, from Hokkaido to Osaka, making it an ideal starting point for any adventure.

Shinjuku Station

Known as the busiest station in the world, Shinjuku is packed with department stores above and a maze of train lines below. From here, it's easy to hop on trains or buses to Hakone, Mount Fuji, or enjoy day trips around Tokyo.

Kyoto Station

Step into Kyoto's modern glass-and-steel hub at the heart of the city. You can shop inside, take in panoramic views from the rooftop, or catch buses that reach all of Kyoto's temples and UNESCO landmarks. Shinkansen and limited express trains leave from here, and coin lockers and ticket machines make getting around simple for visitors.

Shin-Osaka Station

Shin-Osaka is your main connection point between eastern and western Japan. Enjoy local specialties at Eki Marché or browse the shops before catching a Shinkansen or regional train to Osaka, Kobe, or Hiroshima. Coin lockers and ticket kiosks make getting around easy, and station staff are available to help with passes and travel information.

Hakata Station

Kyushu's rail heart, inside a massive shopping complex. Smooth JR Pass exchanges and direct access to Shinkansen and city subway make getting around Fukuoka easy.

Sapporo Station

The heart of Hokkaido's network, with underground malls like APIA and Stellar Place. Trains to Otaru, Asahikawa, and New Chitose Airport connect here, and the JR Information Center has English-speaking staff.

Nagoya Station

Nagoya Station is Central Japan's main rail hub, set beneath the iconic JR Central Towers. The station connects travelers to Shinkansen lines as well as the Hida and Shinano Limited Express trains. Inside, coin lockers and ticket kiosks make getting around hassle-free, while shopping, restaurants, and easy access to city transport keep everything convenient for visitors.

JR Pass Seat Classes

With a JR Pass, you can pick the class that suits your comfort level.

Ordinary Car

The most popular choice for travelers, the Ordinary Car is great value. Seats are usually 2-3 across, with plenty of legroom and space for luggage. Many Shinkansen Ordinary Cars have power outlets at window seats and free Wi-Fi, making it a practical choice for budget-conscious travelers.

Green Car

Think of this as business class. Seats are wider, arranged 2-2, with extra recline, footrests, and personal reading lights. It's quieter and more comfortable. During busy times like cherry blossom or autumn foliage season, Green Car seats are often easier to get, so it's perfect for travelers who want a more premium ride.

How to Reserve Seats with a JR Pass

One of the great perks of a JR Pass is that you can book seats on eligible trains for free. Here's how:

  • Self-Service Ticket Machines: Pop your JR Pass into the machine at major stations and follow the English menu to reserve your seats.
  • JR Ticket Offices (Midori-no-Madoguchi): Staff are happy to help you choose seats and departure times. Just tell them where and when you want to go.
  • Online Reservations: If your pass was bought through the official JR website, you may also be able to book seats in advance online.

FAQs About JR Pass

Q: Can I ride the "Nozomi" with a JR Pass?

The JR Pass doesn't cover Nozomi or Mizuho trains by default. You could pay an extra fee to use them, but Hikari trains run often and are fully covered by the pass.

Q: How do I get through the station gates?

The JR Pass is a magnetic ticket. Just insert it into the automatic gate and don't forget to take it back when you exit.

Q: Any rules for big luggage?

On the Shinkansen, if your luggage exceeds 160 cm in total (length + width + height), you'll need to reserve a seat with oversized luggage space in advance.

The East Japan 10-Day Pass covers a wide area. From Tokyo to Aomori, the Shinkansen takes three to four hours, a long distance. Then, I traveled through Sendai, Matsushima, Fukushima, Omiya, Karuizawa, and Kawagoe Ichiban-gai. From Tokyo to the airport, it's very cost-effective. The JR buses in Aomori provide good connections between attractions, so I basically didn't need to buy additional bus tickets during my trip. Recommended.

I'd give this JR Pass a 99 out of 100. It covered 6 days across Sendai, Aomori, Hakodate, and Lake Tazawa (Akita), saving me half the cost. The only drawback is that there's no ticket exchange at Sendai Airport, meaning I had to buy a ticket for the airport line.

After landing at the airport and clearing customs, I went straight to the manual counter in Terminal 1 to exchange my tickets and pick up the remaining travel tickets. I thought it would be troublesome, but it went very smoothly.

Reviews: JR PASS Japan Kansai Region 1/2/3/4 Day Rail Pass (electronic tickets require redemption) (Includes HARUKA)
Guest User2026-07-07
Redeeming tickets is smooth and simple; you can exchange them for physical tickets at the airport's automatic ticket machines! You can reserve two reserved seats on the Haruka Limited Express, making round trips between the airport and Kyoto/Osaka extremely convenient. While limited to Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and Nara, a 5-day wide-area tour is recommended for those wanting to travel further afield.

Reviews: JR PASS Kansai Area 1/2/3/4-Day Rail Pass (WEST QR Code Entry)

Looking for the most cost-effective way to manage internet and transportation abroad? This lightweight eSIM plan with 500MB per day is the perfect choice. For just over ten dollars, you can enjoy the convenience of digital internet access without any hassle! The worst thing about traveling abroad is landing without internet. Not only can you not check maps, but it's also a hassle to unlock your pre-purchased transportation passes or subway QR codes. With this super-cheap eSIM, you'll have seamless connectivity as soon as you arrive. Whether you're opening a transit navigation app, checking train schedules, or simply showing your pre-purchased transportation pass or ticket QR code at the gate, everything is done instantly and without interruption. While the 500MB data allowance is modest, it's more than enough for independent travelers who need to check train schedules and transfer information frequently. It completely eliminates the hassle of switching to a physical SIM card, so you won't be flustered when transferring at unfamiliar stations. For less than a fraction of the price of a drink, you can unlock a new smart travel experience with "instant internet access + smooth rides". I highly recommend you try it for yourself!
