The last time I went to Darjeeling, India was...
The last time I went to India was... It has been four years since I was quarantined in Delhi and the embassy arranged a charter flight back to China. I lived in India for two years, usually based in Delhi. After work, I would go to South India or the northeast. Of course, I would first consider the season. From October to January every year, the air quality in North India, especially the capital, is the worst. It has been ranked among the top five most polluted places in the world.
🏞️ Darjeeling, my Indian haven
I would choose to stay in the mountains of Darjeeling. It is located in the northeast of India, in the easternmost part of West Bengal, backed by the third highest peak in the world, Kanchenjunga, on the border between Nepal and India. I was lucky enough to see its true face once. You can walk to Tiger Hill and wait for them to appear.
🏠 Darjeeling's community and culture
The main indigenous community in Darjeeling is the Lepcha people, whose original religion was animism. The Gurkha community is a complex composite of many castes and ethnic groups, many of whom have tribal and Lepcha backgrounds. Their main language is 82.32% Nepali and 7.69% Hindi. So you can understand why many faces look similar to Nepalese.
🍵 Darjeeling's tea gardens and life
Another reason for me to go to Darjeeling is its pleasant climate and rich tea gardens. I spend my leisure time shuttling through the mountains and sitting in tea shops for an afternoon. The town's restaurants are rich enough to stay for a week without repeating. Accommodation is also very convenient, with hostels and hotels available.
🚆 Transportation
I took a train from Gaya to Patna, a 3-hour journey, then changed stations and bought a sleeper ticket to Siliguri, a 12-hour journey. Jalpaiguri station carpool, 25 per person up the mountain to Darjeeling.
🌟 Your favorite city in northern India
For me, one of my favorite holiday destinations in North India is Darjeeling. What is your favorite city in northern India?
