Yunnan's most unmissable secret road
As early as the National Day of 2022 when I drove to Yunnan, I planned to drive around Yunnan on the newly built Deqin Road, but at that time the road construction time on the announcement board was extended, so I didn't make it. Four months later, during the Spring Festival of 2023, I finally got my wish‼️
🚗Self-driving loop
Kunming➡️Lijiang➡️Diqing➡️Nujiang➡️Baoshan➡️Dehong➡️Dali➡️Chuxiong➡️Kunming
🌟The most essence section of the journey
Diqing (National Highway 214)➡️Deqin Road➡️Nujiang (National Highway 219)
🛣️Old National Highway 214|The old road to Tibet is still worth it
On the way from Shangri-La to Deqin, there is a section of the old National Highway 214, which was an important route from Yunnan to Tibet. After the new National Highway 214 was built, this old national highway was downgraded to Provincial Highway 236, from an altitude of over 3000 to 4292 meters, you can enjoy the Baima Snow Mountain, the cascading roads and grassland vegetation at close range, and you can see the Meili Snow Mountain in front when the weather is good. The drive to Baima Snow Mountain Pass is the highest road section in Yunnan, and it is also the border between Deqin and Shangri-La.
🛣️Deqin Road|Difficult and beautiful
The construction of Deqin Road started at the end of 2009. It is an important road connecting Diqing Tibetans and Nujiang Lisu. The completion of this road also means that the large loop of Yunnan tourism is finally opened, and there is no need to detour. It is more convenient to go from Yunnan to Sichuan!
The Peacock Mountain Tunnel was the most difficult section during the construction of Deqin Road. It used to have to cross the Peacock Mountain Pass at an altitude of 3800 meters. Due to the harsh climate and perennial snow, it was affected by heavy snow from December to June every year and had to be closed, making the road impassable. Now that the Peacock Mountain Tunnel is open, it only takes less than three kilometers and an altitude of 3400 meters to drive through easily.
🛣️National Highway 219|The picturesque mountains and rivers
When I first saw this border line National Highway 219, I was a bit surprised. There are at least 200 kilometers of artificial sightseeing trails built along the road, with picturesque Bingzhongluo and the first bay of the Nujiang River. Continue north along Bingzhongluo to Tibet.
National Highway 219 runs from north to south through the entire Nujiang Prefecture, with the Biluo Snow Mountain and Gaoligong Mountain on both sides of the river, forming a canyon landscape. There are many places to stop along the way, especially like sitting by the rolling waves of the Nujiang River, and taking pictures casually is very cinematic!

Early in the morning
The sea of clouds rising from the Nujiang River
Hides the distant mountains
The sea of clouds slowly rolls and spreads
Suddenly
To our surprise
A ray of sunshine
Falls from the ridge
We
Break into the picture
And walk into the countryside
Suddenly
The sky becomes bright
The clouds suddenly disperse
Soft and bright
The distant mountains reappear

Nujiang Gorge Tour (5).
Continue along National Highway G219 for 5 km from Bingzhongluo, where the steep mountains on both sides of the Nujiang River are called Shimen Pass. 9 km further on, you will reach the Bingzhongluo Border Checkpoint. After checking your ID card, self-driving tourists can pass through. After a dozen kilometers, you will reach the Yunnan-Tibet border. The scenery along the way is beautiful, and you can occasionally see waterfalls hanging on the cliffs, thin and high. The rocks on both sides of the provincial border are engraved with the words "Yunnan" and "Tibet." The G219 National Highway on the Yunnan side is beautiful and well-paved, known as the Beautiful Highway. On the Tibet side, the scenery is also beautiful, but the road is unpaved, known as the famous Bingzhongluo-Chayu-Chayu Road of the Brave.
If you don't pass the checkpoint, turn right onto the mountain road and drive about 2 km to Qiunatong, a small village inhabited by the Nu, Lisu, Dulong, Tibetan, and other ethnic groups. The houses look primitive, with earth and wood or all-wood structures, and the roofs are covered with irregular stone slabs. The most prominent building is the Catholic church in the village, a purely Chinese-style building under the cross. There are many Catholic churches in Bingzhongluo Town, showing that faith in God has long been rooted in the hearts of the local people.
Qiunatong is the northernmost village in Nujiang Prefecture and one of the last areas to be lifted out of poverty. However, the villagers seem to have no shortage of the pursuit of happiness. A farmer held a 100-day banquet for a newborn, inviting dozens of people to attend. The hall was full, and the laughter and joy could be heard from afar.

A beautiful village hidden at the border of Yunnan and Tibet.
Known as a place where gods and humans coexist 🤩, it is the meeting point of Yunnan and Tibet, and the starting point of Bingzhongluo-Chawalong-Chayu (Bingzhongluo-Chawalong-Chayu), a legendary route for self-driving and off-road enthusiasts. Located at the northernmost end of the Nujiang Gorge - Bingzhongluo.
.
We can enjoy the original beauty of ancient villages, admire the grandeur of the Nujiang River 😍, and take a walk along the historic Tea Horse Road.
.
Driving over mountains and hills, the scenery outside the window is mesmerizing, like a dream 🤩. Passing a cliff, the Nujiang River suddenly makes a 180-degree turn, and at that moment, the famous "First Bend of the Nujiang River" appears, as if welcoming us 😆.
.
Continue to the viewing platform, where you can see the Second Bend of the Nujiang River and Peach Blossom Island. Peach Blossom Island is not a real island, but a large bay formed by the Nujiang River being blocked by the terrain, where villagers farm 😄. Every year in March and April, peach blossoms bloom everywhere, like a fairyland 💐.
.
Main attractions:
1️⃣ Chongding Church: This church can be described in four words - "fusion of East and West." A French missionary built this sacred church in this remote valley in 1935. With a brick and concrete structure, Chinese-style paintings, Western-style arched doors and windows, and twin towers, it presents an elegant concave shape. Destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, it was rebuilt on a smaller scale in 1996. When sunlight falls on the glass windows, it feels like traveling through time, experiencing a strong sense of history. 💒
.
2️⃣ Shimen Pass: Located 3 km north of Bingzhongluo Village, two towering mountains squeeze together like a huge natural stone gate 😲. The mountain walls stretch straight to the sky, truly spectacular! It's like nature's decoration, making people marvel at its beauty 😍!
.
3️⃣ Qiuna Tong, Wuli Village: Starting from Chongding Village in Bingzhongluo, head north along the Nujiang River to reach a small village surrounded by snow-capped mountains, known as the "Eden" 🏞️. The most famous are Qiuna Tong and Wuli Village 🏘️. These villages are like fairylands, making people feel like they are in a paradise 😍!
.
4️⃣ Tea Horse Road: This plank road is suspended on a cliff, winding and narrow, only wide enough for one person to pass sideways, with the roaring Nujiang River on one side. Walking on it, it feels like being swallowed by the breathtaking scenery. 💨🌉
.
5️⃣ Stone Moon: The towering Gaoligong Mountain has a huge round cave, like a bright moon hanging above, incredible! 🌕🗻

Below the wall, an indoor green garden is created with gravel, moss, and ferns, bringing a touch of cheerful green folds to the space. The light and shadow are flickering, naturally lively. The indoor colors are simple and rustic, the lighting is dim and subtle, and the only bright spot is the daylight reflected by the Nujiang River outside the window. Take you to explore the last pure land on Earth! Travelogue of Gongshan Dulong River in Yunnan
🌈🌴In the northwest of Yunnan, there is a hidden mysterious and beautiful place - Gongshan Dulong River. This is the only place in China where the Dulong ethnic group resides, and it is an undeveloped natural sanctuary. I was fortunate to set foot on this land and felt its unique charm. Here is my travelogue to share.
1. ✅The journey to Dulong River:
📍Transportation: To reach Dulong River, you usually need to first arrive at Gongshan County, and then depart from Gongshan County along the winding Dulong River Road. This road is about 79.6 kilometers long and has 794 bends, known as one of the "most dangerous roads in China." Driving on this road requires certain skills and courage, but the scenery along the way is definitely worth the adventure.
⚠️: Road conditions and precautions: Due to the high mountains, steep slopes, deep valleys, and rapid waters of the Dulong River Road, the road conditions are quite complex. It is recommended to drive an off-road vehicle or SUV, maintain a calm mindset, and drive cautiously. Additionally, be extra careful when it rains or the road is slippery to avoid accidents.
2. 🏝🏝The natural scenery of Dulong River:
➡️: Pristine forests and ecological resources: The Dulong River Gorge preserves a well-maintained original ecology, with a forest coverage rate of up to 93%, known as the "Natural Museum of Wild Plants" and the "Gene Bank of Flora and Fauna." Here, you can see various rare wild plants and animals, feeling the magic and greatness of nature.
✳️: The water of Dulong River: The water of Dulong River is crystal clear and emerald green. It flows like a green ribbon through the gorge. Standing by the river, you can hear the gurgling sound of the water and feel its coolness and purity.
3. ✅The cultural customs of Dulong River:
🖼: Dulong ethnic culture: Dulong River is the ancestral home of the Dulong ethnic group, preserving rich Dulong cultural heritage. You can visit Dulong villages to learn about their lifestyle, traditional customs, and religious beliefs. In the villages, you can see courtyard walls made of pebbles, flower pots made of wooden troughs, and orchids planted by the Dulong people, showcasing their wisdom and diligence.
🈯️: Tattooed women: Tattooed women are a unique cultural phenomenon of the Dulong ethnic group. In the past, Dulong women would tattoo unique patterns on their faces to signify that they had come of age and were eligible for marriage. Nowadays, with the changing times, the number of tattooed women has significantly decreased, but they remain an important part of Dulong culture. If you are fortunate enough to meet a tattooed woman, you might want to chat with her and listen to her stories and legends.
4. ❗️❗️Travel tips:
🎋Tour routes: The tourism routes of Dulong River can be divided into the southern and northern lines. The southern line mainly includes attractions such as Pukawang, Hat-wearing Leaf Monkey Viewing Platform, Bapo Village, Hapang Waterfall, and the 41st Boundary Marker; the northern line mainly includes villages in the upper reaches of Dulong River such as Kongdang Village, Jiudang Village, Longyuan Village, and Dizhengdang Village, as well as ecological rafting projects on Dulong River. Tourists can choose suitable routes based on their interests and schedule.
💤: Accommodation and dining: There are many inns and hotels in Dulong Township for tourists to choose from, with moderate prices and complete facilities. Additionally, local Dulong cuisine is not to be missed, such as lamb, beef, and chicken, which are tender and free of any gamey taste, especially when paired with local dipping sauces, making them incredibly delicious.
5. ✅Conclusion:
♻️: Gongshan Dulong River is a land full of mystery and beauty. Here, you can feel the magic and greatness of nature and appreciate the unique charm of Dulong culture. If you have the opportunity to visit Yunnan, you might want to take a trip to Gongshan Dulong River, and I believe you will have an unforgettable travel experience.

Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture - A Hidden Gem in Western Yunnan
Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture is located in the western part of Yunnan Province, within the Nujiang Gorge of the Hengduan Mountains, bordering Myanmar to the west. G219 serves as the main (and perhaps the only) transportation route running north-south through the prefecture. The road conditions on the Nujiang section of G219 are excellent, but as you continue from Bingzhongluo Town towards Chayu County in Nyingchi City, the road conditions suddenly deteriorate, turning into the famous 'Bingcha-Cha' crossing route.
Our trip focused on Nujiang Prefecture and was conducted in winter. Daytime temperatures in the dry-hot valley can exceed 20 degrees Celsius, but nighttime temperatures are low, so be sure to adjust your clothing accordingly.
The Nu River is majestic and grand during the summer flood season, while in winter, it shows a quieter side. Without the influx of rainwater carrying sediment, the quiet waters of the Nu River in winter reveal a rare blue color, like a gemstone.
Not far into Nujiang Prefecture, you will reach the capital, Lushui City. The county town is built along the Nujiang Gorge, with a narrow and long structure. The local economy is not highly developed, and the roads in the town are narrow with compact houses due to the terrain.
Less than an hour's drive from Lushui City, you can reach Dengeng Bathhouse. Dengeng Bathhouse is a free natural hot spring located by the Nu River. During the flood season, the rising waters of the Nu River submerge it, while in the dry season, it emerges. Many local Nu and Lisu people enjoy soaking in the hot spring and are very enthusiastic about introducing the area to visitors. The hot spring is highly recommended.
Near the hot spring, you can also experience the Nu River zip line, a paid activity developed by local villagers. The zip line is a traditional way for locals to cross the river before bridges were built. A round trip costs 50 yuan and is quite thrilling.
Heading upstream along G219, you can stay in Laomudeng Village. It is recommended to stay in a high-altitude guesthouse to enjoy views of the Nujiang Gorge, Crown Mountain, and even the perennial snow on Gaoligong Mountain. The local people are simple and honest, and prices are not high. The guesthouse owner where we stayed was a Nu girl who was very hospitable and cooked delicious traditional local food.
Further up from Laomudeng Village is the former capital of Nujiang Prefecture, the lost town of Zhiziluo. Zhiziluo was once a major transportation hub connecting Nujiang Prefecture with the outside world, with frequent trade and gradual development. However, due to geological factors, all residents moved to Lushui City, leaving behind an empty town that still retains the appearance of the last century.
Continuing south, you will pass Shiyueliang. Shiyueliang is a rock formation with a large circular hole in the middle, formed by erosion. Later, the mountain body uplifted, pushing it to the top of the mountain, resembling a full moon. You can view it from a viewing platform beside G219, and you should also be able to climb up if you enter the scenic area.
The innermost part of Nujiang Prefecture is the famous Bingzhongluo Township. Overlooking from the viewing platform, it is indeed a place where immortals reside. The houses on the dam are scattered, with snow-capped mountains above and the rushing Nu River below. Occasionally, you can hear the crowing of roosters and barking of dogs, with smoke curling up from the rooftops, presenting a peaceful scene. The first bend of the Nu River is also spectacular, and it is recommended to go to the viewing platform on the mountain top, which all the guesthouse owners know how to reach.
Crossing the Nujiang Gorge to the west, you can reach Dulongjiang Township. If you are lucky, you may see tattooed women, but the road conditions are poor, and you need to make a reservation to enter.
Precautions:
1. Driving in the valley, be cautious of falling rocks on cliffside roads.
2. There are many blind turns, so slow down and drive carefully.
3. Adjust your clothing in a timely manner.
4. Respect religious beliefs. French missionaries preached in Nujiang Prefecture in the last century, and there are churches and a certain number of Christians in the area (such as in Laomudeng). After passing Bingzhongluo, you will soon enter the Tibetan area, where Tibetan Buddhism also appears as you go further in.

I thought Nujiang was already beautiful enough! Until I stayed in Wuli Village
The business philosophy of Jixiashan brand is to make local experiences a 'converter,' leading us to self-awareness and reaching the essence of life. Wuli Village is about a 7-hour drive from the airport downstream of Nujiang, near the Bingzhongluo Highway.
This camp is located here, a comprehensive place that integrates exploration, experience, and leisure. The indoor reception area uses an open design, making the space more transparent and spacious. The roof is a canopy tent, bringing natural light indoors. The space is bright and transparent, with functional areas clearly visible, and offers drinks such as Baoshan small-grain coffee and Yunnan Dianhong tea.
The camp has a total of 9 guest rooms, built with the traditional wooden materials of Wuli Village—shale collected from the mountains to form high walls. The designer uses this to converse with the natural wisdom of Wuli Village. They are lined up on the first floor, with each window facing the Nujiang River and Wuli Village on the opposite bank. The interior colors are simple and rustic, allowing a sense of connection with nature.
There are also many interesting outdoor activities to experience here. For example, you can follow rangers deep into the protected area to explore, deeply experience wildlife protection work, learn how to use infrared cameras, and under the guidance of rangers, identify animal trails, install infrared cameras, and collect memory cards, receiving mysterious gifts from the protected area. Additionally, the camp's truffle buffet restaurant is highly recommended, where you can taste unforgettable black truffle delicacies!

Nujiang - The Vanishing Horizon
Nujiang, located in the northwest of Yunnan Province
Second only to the Grand Canyon of Colorado in the United States🏔️, it is the world's second-largest canyon
Home to the autonomous prefecture with the largest number of ethnic minority groups in China
Lisu, Nu, Dulong, Pumi, and other 22 ethnic minorities
On one side is the surging river water like thousands of horses galloping
On the other side are the high mountains and deep valleys where the clouds are so thick🌳
Less commercialized, with fewer people and more beautiful scenery, it's much more beautiful than Shangri-La‼️
90% of the locals in Yunnan have never been there
It's a pity that I never entered it once despite passing by several times
🏔️Nujiang's Terrain
◽️The river is densely covered with rapid water flow, and the small and large rivers belong to three major river systems: the Nu River, the Lancang River, and the Irrawaddy River, which are an important part of the World Natural Heritage 'Three Parallel Rivers'
▫️Named for its large drop and rapid flow, it originates from the southern foothills of the Tanggula Mountains, with the highest peak being the main peak of Gaoligong Mountain, Gawagap Peak, at an altitude of 5128 meters; the lowest point is Shitouzhai in Lushui City, at an altitude of 738 meters, with a relative height difference of 4390 meters
▫️It has a subtropical mountain monsoon climate, with the three-dimensional climate characteristics of 'one river, two mountains, three climates', and a rich ecological environment for flora and fauna

🛖Travel Tips
1. Transportation: Fly✈️ to Baoshan Airport, self-drive or join a tour to Nujiang Prefecture
2. Best time to travel: It is recommended to go after October each year, as the summer is rainy and prone to landslides and mudslides, so it is important to save your life and go in winter
2. The people of Nujiang are simple and good at singing and dancing, and both men and women have a good capacity for alcohol, so don't easily compete in drinking with the people of Nujiang. The cuisine is sour and spicy, and friends who can't eat spicy food should bring diarrhea medicine and stomach medicine in advance
4. Zip-lining is one of the best ways to quickly understand Nujiang, but it is also very dangerous⚠️ It is not recommended for the elderly and the young
5. Nujiang has a mountainous road all the way, it is recommended to self-drive or join a tour, choose a petrol car, because there are very few charging piles, and it is inconvenient to take a taxi

Gongshan Gorge Grand Hotel
Due to changes in plans, the original booking was cancelled, and the time was mixed up when rebooking. Upon arrival, the hotel manager didn't say a word and allowed my expired booking to remain valid, for which I am very grateful. The hotel rooms are nicely decorated, especially the yard behind the hotel, which has a quite large parking lot. This is very rare for the narrow Gongshan County, and it outcompetes most of the hotels here.

Bingzhongluo, the treasure destination in my heart/This homestay is amazing
🌧 I have to say that the air in the mountains is really good, far away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, it is refreshing and it is indeed a place where humans and gods coexist!!
🏠 It has beautiful natural scenery and unique ethnic culture. The room type we stayed in is 'Seeking Clear·180° Viewing King Bed Room', which is a 180° viewing king bed room on the edge of the valley. The room is equipped with Dyson hair dryer, Marshall Bluetooth speaker, custom high-end latex mattress and bathtub, etc. You can see that a lot of thought has been put into every detail.
🪴 The view from the homestay terrace is super good, you can overlook the entire valley, snow mountain~ The photos are also very good~ Waking up in the early morning with the birdsong and drizzle, and then tasting a cup of tea, it is really comfortable.
🍜 The room comes with breakfast, if you want to have dinner at the homestay, you need to book a meal with the homestay in advance~ It is recommended to drive by yourself for convenience.
⚠ The road up the mountain has many sharp turns, be careful to drive carefully, and those who are prone to motion sickness should prepare in advance~
🎐 In summary: This place is very suitable for friends who want to find a quiet place to relax in their spare time, and can have a close contact with nature~ This homestay is also selected as a national B-level tourist homestay! It's really great!

Bingzhongluo "Peach Blossom Island"
From a distance, Peach Blossom Island is very similar to the peninsula of the first bay of the Nu River, the difference is that it has two suspension bridges, which can connect the two banks of the Nu River, one bridge is the old bridge that can only be used by pedestrians, the other new bridge can be used by cars. In addition, the village on Peach Blossom Island is relatively large, with houses relatively dense.
Peach Blossom Island and Bingzhongluo share a viewing platform, Bingzhongluo is on the left, and Peach Blossom Island can be appreciated on the right.
However, this is not the Peach Blossom Island where Master Jin Yong's Huang Yaoshi lived, that Peach Blossom Island is in the Zhoushan Archipelago.

The newly opened Misty Village Campsite Hotel is located at the foot of the mountain
Thanks to a friend, I had the chance to stay at the Misty Mountain Campsite Hotel before its official opening and had a 100% authentic experience.
The hotel is situated opposite Misty Village and has been converted from an existing visitor center. Nestled against the mountain with a water-facing view, the scenery is absolutely stunning. The building materials include local shale stone, and the surrounding landscape is designed to integrate with the terrain, blending seamlessly with the entire site.
The hotel's rooftop serves as a viewing platform, offering panoramic views of the Nu River, the stone cliffs, and Misty Village. Around 8 o'clock in the morning, you can witness the spectacular sight of morning mist enveloping the landscape above Misty Village.
Along the river, the hotel has set up wooden platforms for tent pitching. Imagine camping here, falling asleep to the sound of the Nu River, and waking up to a magnificent river view right outside your tent—it's an unimaginable experience.
Additionally, the hotel's ground floor houses a Kolon store and an exhibition hall featuring local specialties. Along the river, there's a long window that brings the entire Nu River into the room, allowing guests to dine by the window with an absolutely amazing view.
Now, let's talk about the rooms. The hotel has only nine guest rooms, but all of them face the Nu River, offering expansive river views. The rooms are furnished with handcrafted natural materials and carefully selected furniture, providing a warm and tactile experience.
We visited in winter, which was still a bit chilly. It would be more suitable to go when the weather is warmer, and the camping experience would definitely be enhanced.

Nujiang
Nujiang is really so beautiful! The people of Nujiang are really so kind! Everyone should take a trip to Nujiang!
Most of the information online is about self-driving tours to Nujiang, but our itinerary includes Deqin and Shangri-La, which might have uncertain road conditions and we were worried about traffic jams, so we chose public transportation. The Aru Laka trek allows you to see the Gaoligong Mountains and Biluo Snow Mountain, and you can enter the primitive forests with thick snow, where you can see alpine pastures. Our guide, Brother A Luo, was very responsible, explaining various plants along the way, highly recommended!
During the trek to Wuli Village, we saw a small path that led down to the banks of the Nujiang River, where we could feel the surging waters up close, which was very impressive. There are many rocks to climb along the riverbank, so be careful and don't go too close to the river, safety first.
We took a local's ride-sharing car on the Deqin Highway to Deqin, and saw the stunning snow scenery along the way, but the road conditions are variable, so if you're driving yourself, be sure to prepare anti-skid chains and have enough experience driving on icy roads and in snow. Our driver was also super nice!
When we were desperate to find food in Bingzhongluo, a sister by the roadside recommended Yunnan Jianjiang, which has a great environment. On the third floor rooftop, you can see the reflection of the Nujiang River and snow mountains while drinking coffee. The food is delicious and the prices are reasonable, highly recommended! They also offer accommodation, and I definitely want to stay there next time I go to Bingzhongluo.
