Ciocanesti village museum

Just 20 kilometers from Vatra Dornei is the museum-community Ciocanesti, a unique comune in Romania, considered an open-air museum. Here more than 600 houses have their walls painted with tradițional motifs. It has been called the community of the "carved houses". The origin of decorations on the walls of the houses in Ciocanesti dates back to 1950 when a young bride named Leontina, who moved into her mother-in-law's house, started to make small repairs. She calls a painter and asks him to paint the walls, but not just with one color, but with drawings. The painter, who also work as a carpenter and crafts an, decide to reproduce on the outside walls of the house the folkloric patterns the local women paint on Easter eggs and folk costume. Today, this house has become the Țăran House Museum. Inspired by this idea, other villagers decide to paint their houses with traditional Romanian motifs. The predominant colours are red , black, green and yellow. In 2004 Ciocanesti was declared a Museum-Community because of its the unique caracter în the country and un the world. 10 years layer, the commune was designated '"Cultural Village of Romania" and în 2017 it was included în the Top 10 of the most colourful European tourist destination. #newyearadventure
