Rats in restaurant On arrival the hotel is really beautiful - a small oasis tucked away with gorgeous colonial style. The reception staff were really lovely and made us feel welcome. The room was really nice - but there were a few things we noticed (which we let slide at the start) - massive dirty lipstick mark on one of our water glasses, filthy lampshades above the bathroom sinks, bed linen that didn’t feel particularly fresh and the robes as well had a slight greyish colour rather than bright white which they were meant to be. These were all minor things at the start which we didn’t even mention to each other but did notice. We then had our first night at the cocktail bar where our drink was served by the lovely barman (very polite and smily) - as we were drinking we saw a huge rat run across the terrace - we decided it was an island and maybe this is normal (although we really weren’t happy about it). We then were dining within the restaurant and again a huge rat was running towards the table. For us, this is not ok. We asked to move tables as we saw a rat and the waiters barely acknowledged it - didn’t offer any apology and then proceeded to avoid our table for the rest of the night. We informed the manager the next day who assured us he was aware and the rat had been caught, and to “give it a chance”. We weren’t offered so much as a complimentary drink. After dining in the restaurant again the second night and again seeing a rat - for us it was time to check out. Not only is it unpleasant seeing rodents running around while eating but I would say it’s a hygiene issue and makes me question the cleanliness of the kitchen and the safety of the food. The only concession we were offered was to not pay for the remaining nights that we would not be staying for. Really disappointing. On hindsight some things we would add about the whole experience: - Not a 5 star in terms of food, service or cleanliness - Staff really hit and miss - some very friendly some really rude and unhelpful - Rooms didn’t feel clean - Food was average - nothing felt fresh including breakfast - Quite stingey with water - water not replaced within our room (had to ask for it) We are now staying at a different hotel and haven’t seen one rat, so don’t think this is “just an island thing” as the manager stated. The service and food are also worlds apart which has really solidified that our review of 20 degres sud as completely justified - not a 5 star experience whatsoever.

This little boutique hotel is different to your main stream hotels. They are small, intimate and ooze in romance . You arrive through a large wooden door off a small side road and once through the doors you feel as though your are at your own private retreat. They are nestled in a bay with a private small beach. What I loved about it, is that you can hop onto their boat and take a trip across the bay to Grand Baie. I took a taxi back which was easy and safe but they do offer a boat service later in the day. 20 degrees sud has old world charm to it and could be seen as dated but for R&C this all makes sense! Staff were excellent, food was 5 star and nothing short of and the linen ( which you can buy should you want ) was buttery. Yes buttery to the touch! For me personally I would combine this hotel with a second hotel which has more water sports on offer and that iconic island beach view like LUX etc. For couples who want to slow down or those who have just got married this little oasis is perfect !!!!

We visited 20° Sud over Christmas 2024 which also included my 70th Birthday which we celebrated with a delicious cake made by the Chef. We loved our room and the delicious food served in the restaurant. We were made to feel very welcome by all the staff, but particularly would like to mention the waiting staff, Navin Salim, Sandy and Rhubesh the Sommelier for their outstanding service as well as the bar staff - Nash, Hemah and Sayen who helped us taste some of the oustanding Mauritian rums, which the bar specialises in. Finally, we would like to thank Anette, who serviced our room beautifully every day.

We spent a night at 20 Degrés Sud to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and the experience was absolutely unforgettable! From the moment we arrived, we were pampered by the staff, with thoughtful touches that truly moved us. The room was beautifully decorated, creating a romantic and cozy atmosphere that was perfect for the occasion. Dinner at L’Explorateur restaurant was an exceptional culinary experience, a true gastronomic journey where every dish was a delight for the palate. We had the pleasure of enjoying three à la carte meals (dinner, breakfast, and lunch), and each one was outstanding in quality and taste. We also indulged in a massage at the Secret Spa, which was one of the best we’ve ever had. This relaxing moment perfectly complemented our stay. A huge thank you to the entire team at 20 Degrés Sud for making this experience so memorable. We will definitely be back and highly recommend this place for a romantic getaway or simply to treat yourself to something special.

We have just returned from Mauritius, and the most relaxing holiday we’ve had for years. This is largely thanks to the superb staff and ambience of the Hotel 20 Degres Sud in Grand Baie. During our stay we enjoyed the excellent food and service at the hotel’s l’Explorateur restaurant. The hotel is very well located, smart, and efficiently managed, with very pleasant, helpful staff. Thanks are also due to the General Manager, M. Lindsey Thomen for making our stay so special.

This hotel is perfect! Has a very chilled and peaceful vibe. The rooms were lovely, recently renovated. Had everything we need, also had turn down service which was a nice touch. The bed and bedding was amazing, best we've slept in a while! The food was exceptional, by far the best we'd had on our 2 week holiday, would go back just for the food itself! Free kayak and sup on the beach and water taxi twice a day to grand Baie which was great. There wasn't much to do near by without going to grand Baie however but we may have missed some things! The staff were absolutely lovely! They couldn't do more for you, happy, smiley and all very friendly!
Response from Property: Dear, Thank you for your wonderful review of Hôtel 20 Degrés Sud! We’re thrilled to hear that you enjoyed our recently renovated rooms and the added touch of turn-down service. It is fantastic to know that our food stood out as the best part of your holiday, and we’re glad you took advantage of our complimentary kayaking and water taxi service to Grand Baie. We appreciate your kind words about our staff. Their happiness and friendliness are what we strive for, and we’re delighted they made your stay memorable. We look forward to welcoming you back soon! Warm regards, Lindley Thomen General Manager

A small boutique hotel, it might be unnoticeable from the outside, the inside containing 36 rooms with its delightful peacefulness & tranquility in lush tropical gardens. You are made so welcome from all the staff, some have become good friends. We stayed in room 34 for 12 nights, arriving on Monday 9th September. The staff are always so friendly yet professional. Special mention to Oumesh (room Divisional manager), who always greeted us, we spoke on numerous occasions. The concierge team- Micheal, friendly yet professional, gave us great knowledge on the local area & when asked suggested local speciality restaurants. Isaaq, again so friendly & helpful, he would always acknowledge us on seeing us. Also thank you to Jessica & Francesca for all their help. Food & beverage - Lamal, competent, efficient & experienced, knowing our food preferences & allergies, very professional at his job. The restaurant- food is excellent, plates are served with "Flair", tasting as good as they look. Special mention to the Patisserie chef, your deserts & afternoon tea gateaux's were the high-light of the kitchen in my opinion. (after tea served daily 4.00 - 5.00pm). Denis, always with a smile & cheerful attitude, made us laugh so much, whilst doing his daily tasks with skill & expertise. Make sure you book in advance the evening Gourmet cruise on Lady Lisbeth Yacht, with exceptional 5-6 course dishes, expertly served at your table by Denis our waiter. If you have a special occasion, Birthday, Anniversary or just a great evening, please note there is only availability for up to 8 persons per cruise, booking is a must. Also special thanks to Lindley Thomen, who took special interest in making our holiday so special, your kindness & great customer service. Nearly forgot Trevor your Water-taxi driver, so thoughtful, helpful & kind, always made our many trips to & forth to Grand Baie so memorable. Would certainly recommend without hesitation this wonderful hotel. Thank you for a Great Holiday. Keith & Partner.

We are delighted to hear that you found our boutique hotel a peaceful oasis nestled within lush tropical gardens. It's wonderful to know that you felt welcomed by our staff, many of whom strive to build friendships with our guests. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay in room 34 and appreciated the friendly professionalism of our team. Oumesh, our Divisional Manager, along with the concierge team, including Michael, Isaaq, Jessica, and Francesca, will be thrilled to know their efforts made a positive impact on your experience. It’s great to hear that Lamal, in our Food & Beverage department, catered to your preferences and allergies with such professionalism. We take pride in our restaurant, and your compliments about our dishes and the Patisserie chef’s desserts truly warm our hearts. We’re glad you enjoyed our afternoon tea as well! Denis’s cheerful attitude and skillful service are always a highlight, and we appreciate you highlighting his contributions. We are also glad to hear that you enjoyed the Gourmet cruise on Lady Lisbeth Yacht—it's indeed a memorable experience! We went for diner at 7:00 pm. First we drank some cocktails and they served our drinks with some canapé’s, it was really nice. And after we went for our dinner. Everything was perfect, food really delicious. We asked for one special salad and chef sent an exquisite one. And Salim our waiter he was really professional and kind. Thank you for a wonderful evening. Bilal-Bhavna

A cosy hideaway next to the sea with great views of Grand Baie, nice restaurant food and amazingly welcoming and accommodating staff (they even made me special Mauritian dishes to try in the evenings). A boutique getaway with a great location. Special thanks to Hugo, Vic, Naheem and many of the staff (sorry - didn't take a not of all names)!

The food is world class and in addition the premium location makes it the perfect place to relax and enjoy. Highly recommended and we cannot wait to be back.

Response from Property: Dear Mrs Cavanagh, I do take cognition of your below email and did find it very sad that you went that far to support your decision of leaving my Resort after two nights. Even though I acknowledge that you saw a mouse (not a rat, let’s be precise) in the vicinity of the garden part of the restaurant, I felt that my Resort was not up to your expectation. This is why when I sat with you the second time during your stay, I didn’t object to the fact of allowing you to move to another property without any cancellation fees, which you openly agreed and thanked me. The Resort is in a tropical garden where half of the restaurant is located and it does happen that we are visited by mice, someone visiting the property, and any other property on the island, would notice baits that we put in the garden’s area to catch these rodents. We are certified by a registered pest control company who works closely with us to prevent these rodents from getting in our Resort and more in any other space of the Resort, public and private. I understood that you had a phobia linked to that but find it hard to accept your other reasons justifying a move without financial impact. We are recognized as being a hotel serving high quality food and saying that food was average and product not fresh is a right example of trying to seek for reasons for leaving without paying for the rest of the nights. I won’t comment on other aspect of your email as I found it weird that you didn’t tell me these points when we met to discuss your discomfort being in my Resort, and this was twice during your two nights stay. I would have appreciated your honesty for sure. My aim was that you enjoyed your holidays in Mauritius and if my Resort was not the one you expected to stay, I had no issues of letting you move to another Resort without any cancellation fees, which I did. I wish you an enjoyable end of stay on the island. My best personal regards to you. Lindley Thomen, General Manager

Fantastic boutique hotel - details spot on and a charming dining/cocktail experience. The beach area is quite small but staff fantastic and the hotel is also very well located in case you need anything nearby. Just 5* and so worth it. Thank you all!

On arrival I was a little disappointed. The rooms are small. When I got my bearings I realised that everything I needed was in the room. It was clean and Manisha looked after us wonderfully. The staff in general were amazing. Edil, Dennis and Zhaarfir were absolutely the best. There were some staff that were less attentive and you often waited quite a while for service. There is a bar on the beach but it is not always open or staffed. There are definitely not enough sun beds. Towards the end of our holiday some people took to putting towels on the beds first thing. I believe the staff should remove those towels as often the people only turned up late afternoon. It took me a while to get my head round the cost of the evening meal. Although it generally worked I did not expect to spend my holiday having to calculate the cost of my meal. The food was amazing and if you didnt enjoy something they always offered an alternative. Our departure was a late one and you need to vacate your room by 11.30am. There is a departure room for storing your luggage and shower facilities. I think it would be better to be given a time slot for using this as my husband just got in the shower when the staff told us someone else needed the room as they were leaving in half an hour. This is a room where people come and go freely so privacy is difficult. My main problem was breakfast. The choice was fabulous and the food again delicious. However, at 7am the bread and pastries are brought out. Fortunately we are early risers so got to the pastries before the birds! The pastries are uncovered and the birds feast on them. Nibbling them, walking on them and sitting on the light above them so the possibilty of pooping on them!! I understand that we are on an island with beautiful birds but the food should be protected. I do hope the hotel reads this review and addresses this as there were many people who complained about this.
Response from Property: Dear Mr and Mrs, Greetings from The 20 Degres Sud where you just spent your holidays, I would like to thank you for taking time to drop your comments and feedback on your recent stay with us. Glad to know that you’ve had a nice holiday=y with us and that some of the team members managed to exceed your expectations. Rest assured that I will personally pass on your appreciation to them with special mention to Manisha, Edil, Denis and Zhaffir. Please be also aware that I did take note of your comments regarding some experiences during your stay, do note that I will look deeply into them and take that opportunity to enhance the level of service as I do value constructive comments which when taken into consideration lead us the closest to perfection. I do wish you a great end of Year 2023 and do hope to get the chance to welcoming you soon again. My best personal regards to you.

What a fantastic place this is I’m sat on my balcony writing this review All I can say is faultless Manisha helping us with our room - what a lovely lady. The reception staff were brilliant, helpful at all times. The lads sailing us over the bay superb The guys on the bar again brilliant Lastly but not least the food and food service staff, these people are absolutely fantastic. The food at this hotel is as good as anything we have had, and we have been fortunate where we have eaten around the world. I highly recommend the lady lisbeth boat for an off shore dining experience. I will recommend this place to anyone and I think the 1980’s hit by the Kane Gang “ the closest thing to heaven “ sums 20 Degres Sud up perfectly.
Response from Property: Dear Mrs Jayne & Mr Glen, greetings from 20 Degrés Sud, where you just spent your holidays. Thank you for this beautifully written feedback on our team members, our food, and the Lady Lisbeth. Rest reassured that I will personally pass on your message to my team with special mention to Manisha. I am also glad to read that we are up to your expectations and thank you for highly recommending us. Knowing that you were on your balcony writing this review give even more importance to it and the way you summed up the Resort is really touching. We hope to have pleasure to welcoming you back again in a near future. I do wish you both an amazing end of Year 2023. My best personal regards to you, Lindley Thomen, General Manager.

Lovely quirky boutique hotel in good location . Visited twice and will be more than happy to return. Only one ( lovely) restaurant when we stayed ( although I think another one was planned) but food was great and offered different specials each evening. We coincided with a very large group on our last visit which caused a bit of a wait for service in the restaurant on occasion but manager was extremely helpful and more than compensated us for the inconvenience and lack of the usual excellent service . They set the bar high .
Response from Property: Hello from sunny Mauritius where you recently spent your holidays. Thank you so much for your positively written feedback. I am glad to read that even after your second visit, your experience at 20 Degrés Sud was up to your expectations with our top-quality food and the professionalism of my team. Your comment truly means a lot to us and rest reassured that I will personally pass on your review to my team members. I hope to welcome you back in our hotel for a 3rd time very soon.
