The hotel has been converted from an old convent adjacent to the basilica and set around a courtyard with a fountain. Our ‘superior’ double room was equipped with two paper mugs and no glasses. We asked for glasses at reception (correct but frosty) and were told that all rooms were like this as it was easier to clean! The bathroom had no shelves or storage. Bathrobes – forget it! No electric socket at the level of the desk. A single armchair when there was plenty of room for two. Breakfast adequate, but charmless staff. At €112 for b&b this would have been fine but at €212 the place is living off its location rather than hospitality.

We stayed in the hotel portion of the complex not the ”Albergue” side. Clean, modern hotel. Easy walk to bus or train station (we walked from the train station). Close to restaurants and sights. We were doing the Camino de Santiago and received our rented electric bicycles at Hospederia Monastica Pax. They have a court yard in back where we received and stored our bikes until we were ready to start riding. This option was obviously very important in our choosing this hotel. A good option for a restaurant would be ”Los Cazurros” in Plaza San Martin. An easy 10 min walk as you make your way to the ”Plaza Mayor”. Nice large stairs and hallways. Decent sized room and bathroom. Large tiled shower with glass door. Liquid soap and shampoo provided (even toothbrush/ toothpaste/ comb/ shave kit!!). Very quiet at night. We had window facing back that can be opened to let fresh air in (No screen as is common in Europe). A/C worked very well, we were amazed at how silent it was. We chose not to have the Breakfast at 15 Euros as we found it too expensive. We found a place that opens EARLY for coffee and croissants at about 49 Calle la Rua. There were no other places open in the immediate vicinity for an early coffee. We recommend and would definitely repeat again.

Whilst the rooms in this hotel are spacious and well-equipped, it has not managed to 'shake off' the impression of being in university accommodation! On the plus side, staff were very helpful and friendly and free parking was easy to find, both directly in front of the hotel and in the vicinity. The breakfast was quite good and very good value. All covid precautions were in place with several hand gels, signage and individual disposable wooden 'tongs' to use the buffet. However, the internet in our room was practically non-existant! To get any slight internet signal, we had to go out into the corridor and even then, it was hit and miss! In this day and age, that is totally unacceptable! The other factor to take into consideration is that the hotel is rather 'off the beaten track' - there are very few shops, bars or restaurants in the vicinity. Of course, a 15/20 minute walk will take you to the Cathedral or Old Town.

The hotel seems nice when you enter but when leaving the ground floor all is really old and my room was awful. It was a single room and it was way to small. Even the bathroom was really uncomfortable. To close the door you had to change the place of the bin, when seated in the toilet the knees were touching the tub (and I and not tall at all). The room was in the second floor facing the back and the window was to a small closed space with no ventilation. There was always a strange smell that was really noticeable when entering the room. On the plus side, the bed was really comfortable. The breakfast was standard. The staff did not seem really nice or proficient (specially when approached in English).

Once the services provided by the reception staff and the restaurant were launched, the situation at the Paris Spa Hotel was very gratifying.
