BEWARE- closed for the day and moved our booking to Harley’s Tea Room! So very disappointing and as a party of 8 we could not book an alternative at short notice. Having chosen Dunsley Hall Hotel for location, outlook and their sample menu, we were most disappointed to learn that they were not opening that day and we had been moved to Harley’s Tea Room. With its wipe clean tables, noisy milk shake blender and a totally different ambience, this was not what we had signed up for. We understand that there is no link between the businesses and Harley’s are doing a favour in accepting Dunsleys unwanted bookings (there were at least three other Afternoon Tea tables there too) It was unclear where the afternoon tea was produced, but did not include the coronation brioche or Baileys pot,(or anything which resembled an alternative) as mentioned in Dunsleys sample menu. It was very standard selection of products - disappointing! We must however thank Olivia at Harley’s for making us very welcome and doing her best with a set of disappointed customers. She and her staff were friendly, professional and saved the day. There were 8 of us, so of course we had a lovely afternoon - but just beware - you may not get what, or where you booked! Poor show Dunsley!

Here now. Nice location, lots of period features, pleasant staff…..almost non existent WiFi (others complained too), nowhere to work in room, could be cleaner, no restaurant mon-tue, bar served by receptionist half way across hotel. Could be good but really needs some TLC and WIFI. I won’t return because as a business hotel it’s pointless, I achieved zero meaningful work tonight

Sunday lunch was amazing, had the room to ourselves as it was a special birthday celebration. The room was laid out lovely with table cloths and flowers provided on the main table. Was told how tender the beef was, the vegetarian option was just as good. They even brought over food from Harley’s for the fussy eaters. Great puddings too. Could not fault the service and friendliness of the staff. Would defiantly go back for Sunday lunch.

Terrible experience checked in left two hours later place was deserted not another guest in sight yet when we asked to change our room we were told they were fully booked! No restaurant service bar was in darkness a lone male porter who was extremely arrogant and did not seem very welcoming or helpful. Asked why the hotel appeared so empty he repeated “we are full tonight” so we asked when they were all due back as no cars in car park no sign of any other guests no sound in the place anywhere and then he started closing doors and turning lights off in communal areas. Clearly he was not being truthful there were no other guests and we checked out after two hours. We asked about a refund but he said no as it was not his fault the hotel was not suitable so we had to try and seek other accommodation for that night at gone 10pm at night. We had been out in the Delft room which was very creepy. The door opened all by itself even though it was shut. We had read stories about haunting and most activity had been in that exact room so we asked him and he seemed very proud of that fact and then said it was true and that other guests had regularly reported ‘something’ pulling the bed clothes off you at night and sounds of people walking up and down the hallway outside the room - even thought the hotel was deserted apart from us. Being two woman on our own he seemed delighted he had terrified us. We still not sure why he put us in that room but there was no way we were staying in there. He seemed pleased when we went downstairs saying we wanted to check out. No apology no worry of where we would stay at that time of night just a creepy smirk! Suppose to be five star but no five star service and no toiletries in en-suite apart from miniature bar of soap and miniature bottle shampoo - for two people!! Managed to get a bottle of wine £26 just plonked it on the table no opening it for us or pouring it - just walked away. Noticed creepy tea cups and saucers on the coffee table in lounge despite no other guests - possibly for the ghosts??! Certainly will never go anywhere near the place again!

My sons bought me a voucher for afternoon tea. I decided to ask my friend to share it with me as she has been unwell lately. We were asked to pay an extra £7.90 for the two of us as its festive tea. When we arrived we were the only ones there and it was very quiet. There was no atmosphere, and no Christmas feel to the room. The food arrived and we were very underwhelmed. A small selection. I have previously had a lovely afternoon tea next door, at Harleys. Loads to eat and good value. I wouldn't recommend Dunsley Hall, I would choose Harleys.

Room very spacious. Television was quite small for the room, but beautifully decorated. Sadly there was a party on the Saturday night and a lot of banging of doors until quite late which disturbed our sleep. The Sunday evening was nice and quiet though.

Two of us stayed here with work and its a little hidden gem. Unfortunately we came in a taxi so didn't get to explore the area to know how good the location was but the hotel itself was lovely. I had the black and white room with two single beds and it was lovely! Very clean and atmospheric! The shower was fantastic and almost took my skin off (figure of speech). We had dinner and breakfast in the smokehouse next door. The food was lovely. Highly recommend the salmon. Breakfast was also in the smokehouse which again was very nice. Would recommend.

Excellent staff and food. This place is a little tired inside, but overall our experience was pretty good, we had an issue with the bed on our first nights stay but the reception staff resolved this immediately and we were moved to a different room. We would definitely stay here again if we were wanting to be just outside the seaside town of Whitby which is very near. Oliver was working the bar & restaurant and i would have to say what a gem of a young man he is, polite, attentive and very good customer service skills.

Stayed here for 2 nights whilst visiting family in the area. Very comfortable room and bed, the house is a period building so that little bit different. Warm and cosy and receptionist very friendly and helpful. Breakfast at Harleys on-site was really good and ate at The Manor House , about 5 minutes away, in the evening, which is another lovely building and food very good. Would def stay here again.

We have had several Sunday lunches at Dunsley Hall and they have all been very good- except the one we had today. Positives: Starters - Tomato Soup and Smoked duck were good. Main Course: Lamb shank very tender. Negatives: Roast Beef - 2 of us, very disappointing. Mine was not tender and both were tasteless. Vegetables very disappointing. Oversweet red cabbage, French beans and cauliflower cheese. Not the selection we expected. Desserts not up to standard. Coffee was weak and tasteless. Was the usual chef off duty? Service was dreadful. After finishing our main course the waitress stood talking to two ladies at the next table for well over 15 minutes. Then walked out leaving us still waiting to order our desserts and two other tables waiting for their bills. One client came from a private party to ask to order drinks. There was no one available at the end of out meal to complain to. I hope the hotel staff read this review and take the necessary action to improve standards of food and service.

We had afternoon tea at Dunsley Hall Hotel and what a fantastic time we had. I’m always dubious when taking me two children (under the age of 3) to a calm setting like afternoon tea but my word were dunsley hall accommodating! They provide a child’s afternoon tea for £12.50 with much more simpler choices to the adults so most kids will enjoy the experience just as much. We were sat in a lovely, clean, bright, almost sun room with a great view to the gardens. Service was speedy and polite and the afternoon tea was beautiful. Honestly they’re raspberry cheesecake was devine! The hotel itself is beautiful, has plenty of character as you walk in. Can’t say much about the rooms as we didn’t stay there. Will definitely be returning ❤️

Really enjoyed our short stay here - we had a room overlooking the terrace and pond, which was beautiful. This is a historic building so of course somethings creak, and there are steps, but it all adds to the ambiance. The room was spotless, the bed and linen was perfection and the facilities were acceptable. We got a good deal online and thought it was good value. In the evening we ate in the adjacent smokehouse, Harleys and the cafe for breakfast - food was great. Can’t help feeling that the hotel could do more to market/promote the options for eating - information in the room on opening times and menus or offer 10% off for DHH guests etc. As an owner, I would want to make sure I’d done everything to ensure guests ate here!

Treated a friend to afternoon tea, it’s a lovely quiet little place, the building is stunning, the staff are very welcoming and everything is nice and clean. The sandwiches were fresh and the cakes were delicious. It’s an old building so the setting for afternoon is perfect, this is the second time I have actually been here, previously for a friends wedding and both times now have been special.

Nice afternoon tea but over priced at £25 ahead. 5 finger sandwiches each plus 5 small cakes & a scone with clotted cream which was pre packed in a plastic tub & jam in mini jars , think a nice touch would have been to serve both the cream & jam in serving dishes. Every thing was nice but not worth the money , for that price a glass of prosseco would have made it better value . Had cheaper & better quality elderly where

Very dated and tired looking. Reception had a strange bad smell. Room had a step not marked and went flying down it into the wardrobe. Toilet made an incredible loud knocking noise got 5 minutes after use. Shower tiny. No on site food though there is a smoke house open from 3pm. Kept awake because walls are so thin you can hear everything. Had to phone on my mobile early hours to ask reception to find the Scottish chap who was on his phone to lower his voice, I heard every word of his incredibly long late night conversation. No breakfast offered , no idea if they had any. For the money and with no on-site facilities I’d have thought a bottle of water in the room would have been nice. Never ever ever again would I stay here or advise anyone who wants any sleep to stay there. Was so looking forward to it as well.
