Fort Davis Inn & RV Park

The outside of the property looks like an older motel, which it actually is. But the rooms are as shown in the photos. The remodel was very nice. Flooring, paint, large TV, comfy bed and pillows, cold and quiet AC, granite counter in bath, microwave and large fridge. Free wifi. Free continental breakfast. Breakfast was ok, cereal and microwavable McMuffins, coffee and juice. Pancake machine was not working. Ice machine was not working. As mentioned, room was super comfortable, shower had alot of hot water but as in most hotels these days the shower head has a limiter so water pressure was not great. Other than that it was a fantastic stay and would recommend and stay there again. Now for the town.....Not much in Ft. Davis. We went for the observatory Star Party and a trip inside Davis Mt. State Park. Both were fantastic. At the Star Party when its announced telescopes are ready you should leave the presentation and go directly to them. we waited til the end of the presentation and the lines for viewing were very long and not moving much. We looked at 2 of the smaller ones but were not impressed and left. The Davis St. Park was nice. The drive to the top and the views were fantastic. Indian Lodge is still closed as is the road heading there so you can't even drive to it to just look. One person at the HQ upon checkin was not helpful at all. I asked questions and was just given a map and sent on my was. Much nicer and informative folks at the Interactive center. The Ft. Davis National Site and CDRI were recommended but we ran out of time for them. There isn't much anything else in Ft. Davis. Only a handful of places to eat, most of which close very early or are not even open most days of the week. You should consider bringing your own food and maybe a small camping grill to cook. Porter's is a line of grocery stores in the area. The one in Ft. Davis is fantastic, you can find almost everything you need there. We made a trip to Marfa and the town was basically closed. We visited Moonlight Gemstones, stopped at the Visitor's Center, which was closed, and after driving around a few minutes just left. The Marfa Prada is NOT in Marfa. Its actually 45 miles away in Valentine. The Marfa Lights apparently are hit and miss so don't count on seeing them. Alpine is the big city in the area. University, hospital, DPS, fast food, chain hotels and a few other places. If you need anything in the area you will have to go to Alpine. Overall we enjoyed the trip and would recommend it with a few changes as I mentioned above.
