This is hands-down the best hotel that I have stayed in during my Sichuan trip. I have stayed in a total of 5 different hotels during my trip and this is the best of all as per my daughter's opinion too. The hot bath provided a much needed rest and relax leisure for the family and the room is extremely well maintained and cozy. I highly recommend this place and will definitely only book this hotel if I comes back to Chengdu again. 5-stars!

The hotel I chose for my birthday has a great location. There are many places to eat, drink and play downstairs near Yulin. After dinner, I walked around to experience Chengdu's nightlife, which is also quite good! I ordered a cake in advance and sent it to the hotel front desk to help put it in the refrigerator. After that, we lit candles without a lighter, and the front desk also sent it. The service was very thoughtful and well received! I was very satisfied with the experience and I will come again next time. The hotel I chose for my birthday has a great location. There are many places to eat, drink and play downstairs near Yulin. It was my first time in Chengdu and I booked this hotel because I was attending a concert at the 大魔方,and I wanted somewhere that is convenient to get to the location but with food nearby. The train station is relatively near within a 10 mins walk, and has some pretty nice restaurants nearby too! I have tried the steamboat with skewers (玉林串串香) that is nearby and it is really not bad with each skewer cost at about 1RMB? The hotel room itself is quite clean, but the bathroom and toilet doors do not reach the celling and floor, so that might be a concern for some (which is not an issue for me since I was staying alone). The room was quite spacious! The free washing machine and dryer (on floor 21) were an added bonus too! The front desk staff (especially the staff called Ivy) were really helpful especially when I ordered deliveries and had some issues. They made my stay even more special and great!

This hotel is also conveniently located, the staff was very friendly and everyone was very receptive, shower had good water temperature and water pressure but the water leaks from the shower are to the toilet area because there is no door in between, the bed was comfortable (not too firm and not too soft, so just right), and great value for the price! Would recommended to future travelers.

The room was clean and hygienic without any peculiar smell. It was quiet at night and I slept very well. The overall layout was quite good, with complete facilities. The small refrigerator was quite useful. It would be better if there were more chairs in the room. The breakfast was very rich, with freshly cooked rice noodles and wontons. In addition, there were various dishes, fruits, drinks, various breads and small cakes. You can also DIY tofu pudding, which was a good experience.

Booked online, this store is very well decorated. Very artistic. It feels like old Chengdu. The decoration is very new. A staff member greeted me at the door and helped me carry my luggage to the front desk. I was given a cup of coffee when I checked in. I was also asked about my requirements for the floor orientation. After checking in, you will be taken to the elevator🛗. This is great and deserves praise. Many hotels are not as good as this hotel. Went for breakfast in the morning. Their handmade dishes are super delicious. Ha ha. good. The room is fully intelligent. Clean and hygienic. Goose down quilt written on the Internet. It's so comfortable. All in all super awesome.

This hotel really impressed me! From check-in to check-out, every detail was satisfactory. The room was spacious and bright, the furniture was elegant and comfortable, and the bedding and toiletries were of high quality, which made us feel cared for. The hotel is in a prime location, with convenient transportation and many attractions around. The waiters were warm and thoughtful, always smiling, which made people feel particularly friendly. The reception staff were extremely helpful and kind. The gym was very clean and organize. Equipped with all necessary equipment and it was 24/7. There is a nice sauna room in the mens bathroom next to the swimming pool. The swimming pool closed at 10/11. The chlorine in the water was too much and it left a very strong chemical residue in the air that it burned my eyes because of lack of ventilation in the pool area. The room was squeaky clean. Amazing. The washing machine and tumble dryer were new and worked great. The bath and shower drained properly which was good for a change. The air conditioner made the room nice and cold. As for the room the only critique I have is that the wifi was very bad that I couldn't do my work on my laptop because of the slowness of the wifi. Over all I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Chengdu Travel Guide for First-time Visitors: Top Attractions, Transport Options & Tips

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province in southwestern China, is a city that effortlessly blends rich cultural heritage with a modern, vibrant lifestyle. Known as the home of the beloved Giant Panda, Chengdu attracts millions of tourists eager to visit its world-renowned research base and encounter these cuddly creatures up close. Beyond pandas, Chengdu is famed for its unique cuisine, especially spicy Sichuan hotpot, and its relaxed teahouse culture, where locals enjoy sipping tea and chatting for hours. Visitors are drawn to its laid-back pace, with tree-lined streets, bustling markets, and ancient temples offering a fascinating glimpse into both old and new China.

When it comes to travel tips, Chengdu is a gateway to other stunning destinations in Sichuan, including the majestic Mount Emei and the scenic Jiuzhaigou Valley. The city is also renowned for its thriving arts scene, from traditional Sichuan opera to modern art galleries. Searchers often look for insider tips on exploring Chengdu’s vibrant food scene, from street vendors to high-end restaurants, or tips for navigating the city’s many parks and historical sites. Whether seeking adventure or relaxation, Chengdu’s appeal is undeniable, making it one of China's most sought-after travel destinations.

Getting to and Around Chengdu

Ready to explore Chengdu, the gateway to Sichuan's culture and cuisine? Whether you're flying in, taking a train, or traveling by bus, getting to Chengdu is straightforward and hassle-free.

If you’re flying, Chengdu has two major airports: Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) and the newer Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU). Both airports are well-connected to the city, and your choice depends on where you're coming from and where you're headed next.

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) , located about 50 kilometers southeast of the city center, is the newer of the two and handles a growing number of international and domestic flights. The airport is modern, spacious, and well-equipped. You can easily take the metro (Line 18) from the airport directly to downtown Chengdu in about 40 minutes. If you’re in a hurry or have lots of luggage, taxis and ride-hailing apps like Didi are readily available for a more direct trip.

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU), about 16 kilometers southwest of the city, remains the main hub for both domestic and international flights. From here, you can easily reach the city center via the Airport Express Metro Line (Line 10), a taxi, or an airport shuttle bus. Shuangliu is a bit more centrally located compared to Tianfu, making it a more convenient choice for some travelers.

Here are two recommended hotels in Chengdu that offer convenient shuttle services for easy access to the airports:

Hotel NameLocationDistance from Airport (CTU/TFU)Shuttle Service Info
Holiday Inn Chengdu AirportNo. 166, Tianfu Street, Shuangliu District, Chengdu1.5 miles from Shuangliu Airport (CTU)Free shuttle service available. Breakfast included.
Chengdu Tianfu HotelNo. 100, Tianfu Avenue South, Chengdu2 miles from Tianfu Airport (TFU)Airport shuttle service, available on request. Pre-booking required.

Both of these hotels offer excellent proximity to the airports and are ideal for travelers looking for convenience and comfort after a long journey.

Chengdu is a large city, but don’t worry—getting around is a breeze thanks to its well-developed public transport system.

Metro: Chengdu’s metro system is one of the most convenient ways to explore the city. The fares are affordable, with the base fare starting at CNY 2 for shorter rides. For longer trips, expect to pay a bit more, but it’s still very reasonable. Be aware that you'll need to go through security checks at the stations, so allow a little extra time for bag inspections.

Buses (公交): Chengdu's buses are an excellent option if you want to explore more local areas, especially for short trips. Fares start at CNY 2, and most buses are air-conditioned for comfort. While buses can be a little tricky for tourists, using a translation app or asking locals for help can make it much easier. They’re also a budget-friendly option compared to taxis or the metro.

Taxis (出租车): Taxis are plentiful in Chengdu, and you’ll find them easily available in most parts of the city. While you can hail a taxi on the street, it's often easier and more reliable to book a ride using a Didi app (China's version of Uber). Fares start at CNY 13, and using Didi is often cheaper than flagging down a regular taxi, especially during rush hours.

Best Areas to Stay in Chengdu

Best Areas to Stay in Chengdu

Wuhouci/Jinli Ancient Street: This area is ideal for first-time visitors looking to immerse themselves in Chengdu’s history and culture. You're just steps away from the iconic Wuhou Shrine and the charming Jinli Ancient Street, where you can stroll through traditional alleys, enjoy local snacks like chuan chuan (skewered meat) and spicy hotpot, and shop for souvenirs. It’s also the best spot for a taste of Sichuan opera with its famous face-changing performances. While it’s not the cheapest area to stay, you'll get a deep dive into the culture and all the must-see attractions within walking distance.

Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alleys): Looking for a more laid-back, hip vibe? Kuanzhai Alley is the place. This historical area has been modernized with trendy bars, tea houses, and boutique shops while retaining its ancient charm. It’s a great area to stay if you enjoy a more relaxed, local atmosphere with an artistic touch. The area is less touristy than Wuhouci but still close to major attractions like the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (a short metro ride away). It's a bit more affordable than the central tourist hubs, but the vibe is perfect for those seeking a cool, bohemian feel.

Chunxi Road/ Tianfu Square: If you love shopping and want to be in the heart of the city’s action, Chunxi Road is where you need to be. This pedestrian street is the shopping capital of Chengdu, with everything from luxury brands to local vendors. It’s always buzzing with energy, and Tianfu Square nearby offers easy access to the metro system, making it convenient to reach other parts of the city. While hotels in this area can be a bit on the pricier side, staying here means you’ll be at the center of everything, from shopping to restaurants, and easily connected to other attractions.

Must-Visit Attractions in Chengdu

Must-Visit Attractions in Chengdu

Chengdu offers a wide range of attractions for first-time visitors:

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding: One of the most iconic experiences in Chengdu is getting up close with the world-famous Giant Pandas. At the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, you can watch these adorable creatures in their natural habitat, feeding, playing, and interacting with each other. The research base is dedicated to conservation and is one of the best places to see pandas in China. The early morning is the best time to visit, as pandas are most active during this period. Don't forget to stop by the panda museum to learn about conservation efforts and the history of these gentle giants.

Jinli Anient Streect: For a taste of traditional Chengdu, Jinli Ancient Street is the perfect destination. This historic street takes you back in time with its traditional architecture, red lanterns, and winding alleyways. It's a place where you can wander through teahouses, local shops, and street food stalls selling Sichuan snacks. Watch local street performers showcasing traditional music and acrobatics, and don't miss out on the famous hand-pulled noodles or spicy tofu from one of the street vendors. It’s an ideal spot for those looking to experience the cultural heart of Chengdu while enjoying its vibrant atmosphere.

Wenshu Monastery: For a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, Wenshu Monastery is a serene Buddhist temple that offers a glimpse into Chengdu's spiritual side. Founded over a thousand years ago, this monastery is known for its beautiful architecture, peaceful gardens, and ancient Buddhist relics. You can take a moment of quiet reflection in the temple's gardens, or explore the surrounding vegetarian restaurant offering delicious local dishes. Wenshu Monastery is not just a religious site, but also a beautiful place to enjoy some tranquility in the middle of the city.

Chunxi Road: If you're a shopaholic or simply want to experience the modern side of Chengdu, Chunxi Road is the place to be. This bustling pedestrian street is packed with luxury boutiques, department stores, and a mix of local vendors. It’s one of Chengdu’s most famous shopping districts, where you can find everything from international brands to local souvenirs. The street is lined with malls, cafes, and restaurants, making it the perfect place to spend a few hours browsing, dining, and soaking in the lively atmosphere. If you're in the mood for a more upscale experience, the nearby Taikoo Li shopping center offers a chic blend of high-end boutiques and contemporary art galleries.

Leshan Giant Buddha: A short trip from Chengdu will lead you to the Leshan Giant Buddha, the world’s largest stone Buddha, carved into the cliffs where the Minjiang, Dadu, and Qingyi rivers meet. This monumental sculpture stands at an incredible 71 meters tall and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can either take a boat ride to see the Buddha from the river, or climb the nearby steps to get a close-up view. The site is not just a feat of engineering but also offers a peaceful ambiance, with lush green surroundings and scenic views of the rivers. This is a must-see for history buffs and nature lovers alike, offering a deep connection to Chinese culture and spirituality.

Must-Visit Attractions in Chengdu

Getting to Chengdu

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU)

Chengdu’s main international gateway, Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, is located just 16 kilometers from the city center, making it a short drive to downtown. The airport connects Chengdu to major international hubs like Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, as well as destinations across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Whether you're flying in for business or leisure, Shuangliu is well-equipped to handle both international and domestic flights.

  • Transportation from the Airport:
    • Metro: The Airport Express Line (Line 10) connects Shuangliu Airport to the city center, taking about 30 minutes.
    • Airport Shuttle: Multiple shuttle buses operate between the airport and various parts of the city.
    • Taxis: Taxis are readily available at the airport, and the ride to the city center typically takes about 30-40 minutes.
    • Ride-Hailing Apps: Services like Didi can also be used to book a ride directly from the airport for a more personalized experience.

Chengdu Railway Station

For those traveling within China, Chengdu Railway Station offers a well-connected hub for high-speed trains. Located in the city center, it’s easy to access from most major attractions and hotels.

  • Train Connections: Chengdu Railway Station is the main terminal for high-speed trains connecting Chengdu to other major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Chongqing, and more. It’s a great way to explore other regions of China while visiting Chengdu.
  • Transportation from the Station:
    • Metro: Chengdu Railway Station is directly connected to the metro system via Line 1, making it easy to get around the city once you arrive.
    • Taxis and Ride-Hailing: Taxis are available outside the station, and you can also use ride-hailing services like Didi for a faster and more convenient trip to your destination.

Getting Around Chengdu

Metro System

Chengdu boasts an efficient and affordable metro system that makes traveling around the city easy and comfortable. The system is well-developed with multiple lines, and more are being added as the city grows. The metro is the best option for avoiding traffic and getting to major destinations quickly.

  • Fares: Metro fares are affordable, starting at CNY 2 for short trips. The fare increases with distance, but it's still a budget-friendly option.
  • Lines and Coverage: Key lines include Line 1 (which runs from the Chengdu Railway Station to Zhujiang), Line 2 (connecting major areas like Chunxi Road and Wuhou Shrine), and the newer Line 7 and Line 10 that cover even more destinations.
  • Operating Hours: The metro runs from 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM, so it’s convenient for both daytime and evening travel.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing (Didi)

Taxis are a convenient way to get around Chengdu, but during rush hours or in busy areas, it may be a bit tricky to find one. Luckily, ride-hailing services like Didi are widely available in Chengdu and are often a better option for both locals and visitors.

  • Taxis: Taxis in Chengdu are relatively inexpensive, with a base fare of CNY 13. They are available at most major locations, such as airports, railway stations, and hotels. Just keep in mind that language barriers can sometimes be an issue, so having your destination written in Chinese can help.
  • Ride-Hailing: Apps like Didi are the local equivalent of Uber and are very popular in Chengdu. These services are typically cheaper than traditional taxis and are great for getting around quickly without the hassle of flagging down a cab. You can use Didi in both Mandarin and English, making it easier for international travelers.
  • Payment: Most taxis accept cash or WeChat Pay, but for Didi rides, it's best to use WeChat Pay or Alipay, which are widely used for cashless payments across China.

Public Buses

Chengdu’s public bus system is an economical way to get around, though it may be more challenging for newcomers due to the language barrier. Buses are particularly useful if you need to reach places that aren’t directly accessible by metro.

  • Bus Fares: Starting at CNY 2, buses are very affordable. Many buses are also air-conditioned, providing relief during the summer months.
  • Routes: Buses cover nearly all parts of the city, but the routes might be more difficult to navigate for non-Chinese speakers. Using a translation app or asking a local for help can make things easier.

Helpful Tips for Visiting Chengdu

Chengdu is a dynamic city that blends traditional culture with modern convenience. Here are a few essential tips for a smooth visit:

Language: While Mandarin is widely spoken, you may hear Chengduhua, the local Sichuan dialect. English is limited outside tourist spots like Wuhouci, Chunxi Road, and Jinli Ancient Street. Using a translation app can be very helpful, and locals are generally patient and friendly with visitors.

Weather: Chengdu’s climate is mild, with hot, humid summers (around 35°C/95°F) and cool winters (5°C/41°F). The city is known for frequent rain, especially in spring and autumn, so it’s wise to carry a light raincoat or umbrella.

Currency & Payment: The Chinese Yuan (CNY) is the official currency. Cash is useful for small vendors, but mobile payments like WeChat Pay or Alipay are widely accepted and more convenient.

Local Etiquette: Chengdu locals are warm and hospitable. A handshake or nod is common when greeting. Sharing meals is a key part of the culture, so embrace the family-style dining experience. Slurping noodles or drinking soup directly from the bowl is perfectly normal and appreciated as a sign of enjoyment.

Safety: Chengdu is one of China’s safest cities. While violent crime is rare, be mindful of pickpockets in busy areas like Chunxi Road. Carry valuables securely and use ride-hailing apps like Didi for safe nighttime transport.

What to Eat in Chengdu

What to Eat in Chengdu
  • Spice Level: Sichuan cuisine is spicy and numbing, so if you’re not used to heat, start with a milder dish and work your way up. Most restaurants will ask you how spicy you want your dish—be prepared to say "mild" or "medium".
  • Chopsticks: You’ll find that chopsticks are the most common utensils used in Chengdu. If you’re not comfortable using them, don’t worry—just ask for a fork or spoon (though this is rare in traditional settings).
  • Sharing: Meals are often served family-style in Chengdu, so don’t be surprised if your table is full of different dishes to share. It’s all about the communal experience.
  • Street Food: Don’t skip out on Chengdu’s street food—chuan chuan and baozi (steamed buns) are staples that you can find at night markets and street corners. It’s a great way to try lots of flavors for a low price.
  • Tea: Chengdu is famous for its tea culture. Visit one of the many teahouses in the city, especially in places like Kuanzhai Alley or Wuhouci, to experience a traditional tea ceremony.

AAnonymous UserThe room is large, the bathroom is well separated into wet and dry areas, clean and tidy, with disposable slippers and good wind power. There is a self-service laundry service on the first floor. The laundry room is very clean, and each room is equipped with laundry detergent, which is very convenient. The breakfast is also good, with hot dandan noodles to choose from, as well as white rice, salad, bread, Greek yogurt, etc. However, when a clerk confirmed the breakfast, he asked twice if it was one breakfast. The reason was that Ctrip points were exchanged for an extra breakfast, but it did not directly show that two breakfasts were ordered, so it was wrong. In addition, there is a small steep slope from the lobby to the elevator, and it is difficult to push large luggage up. Overall, it is still a very good hotel with a good location close to Xinnanmen subway station and one stop to Chunxi Road. I went to Jiuzhaigou for a few days on the way, and they could help me store my luggage. I left on the last day and saw the staff in a meeting. It is a hotel that pays more attention to service management.

The traffic is very convenient, and the little housekeeper is also very responsible to inform all matters! recommend ✨ [First glance into the room] Wow, so clean 🙋 [For the landlord, I want to say] Very responsible, answer all questions 💡 [Small surprise from the homestay] Very comfortable and clean 📍 [For the convenience of the surroundings, I want to say] Super close to the subway station, just a few steps away, and there are snacks at the door, Sichuan cuisine and authentic hot pot are delicious! 🛏 [Housing facilities I must mention] Mahjong machine is beautiful, air conditioning is available

RResonanceMikiI would not recommend to stay in this hotel. The service staff and receptionists are nice, however there are many cons. - Aircon in the room is useless, not cold enough/not working properly. - Courtain wont close all the wayso the sunlight hits your face. - Super noisy hotel, noisy kids and noisy chefs cutting bones at 6am. -Uncomfortable pillows. - Water takes too long to get hot, the temperature is not enough. - WIFI extremely slow almost not working!! and more... I wont come again to this place.

碧碧0915This hotel is located in the center of Chengdu, and the meeting points for various tours are within walking distance, so the location is excellent and the price is reasonable. The hotel is also 700m from Huaxiba Station on Chengdu Subway Line 1, so it is within walking distance. The hotel itself is quite old because of its low price, and the floors and elevators in the rooms are dirty, and the service is not very recommended. Also, the cleaning staff leaves the window open, so there are a lot of insects in the room, and I complained to the lobby, but the window was still open the next day. If you can tolerate these things, it's cheap and good. Access Chengdu Tianfu International Airport → Chengdu Subway Line 18 South Station → Chengdu Subway Line 1 Huaxiba Station, it takes 10 minutes. The subway fare is 10 yuan (220 yen).

AAteszOur favorite Hostel in Chengdu. This place was our basecamp during our whole China trip. We could leave our backpacks for 6 weeks without problems for free. The rooms are clean and quiet, the staff is friendy and speaks English. They even helped us to register WeChat which is essencial for traveling in China. You can wash clothes for a small fee (0,60 euro inkl. detergent). There are many public ares to hang around. High speed internet. The location is amazing. It is directy next to the metro Station Line 3, only one station from Chunxi Road. There are many very nice local food options around. We came back 3 times and would stay again in future.

AAnonymous UserThe service is very good. I went to West China to see a doctor and the doctor said there was no need for a check-up. I wanted to check out. Although check-out on Ctrip was no longer possible, the merchant still refunded me. I wish the merchant a prosperous business!
