The hotel is right in front of the cathedral, the location is very central, and Diagon Alley is also within walking distance, which is not convenient for parking. 7.8 minutes after walking the street one night behind the parking lot is okay, parking during the day is very expensive. Welcome to us is a very old-fashioned British gentleman, introduced the room for 10 minutes, and encountered the butler-style service for the first time.

Really enjoyed the room and the restaurant. The room was a single room but with a comfortable bed and a great shower. It was small but well set out with plenty of space for a person on their own. The room looked over the rear garden but I didn’t get any noise other than a bit from the kitchen fan which stopped after the restaurant closed

In May 2022, I spent 3 days in York as a treat for my birthday. This trip was one of many solo-travels that I had planned for the year and when planning this trip and looking on Booking.com I found this hotel to be the best of the bunch on money and closeness to the town. The hotel itself was part of a pub/restaurant but my room was separate from the building in a sense as it was outside and up the stairs. The pub was incredible, the atmosphere and theme was just what I was looking for and I absolutely loved the history behind the building. The room, just as expected, fit well with the theme with vintage inspired decor and furniture, a beautiful and home-away-from-home feel to it. The room was clean, comfortable and just what I wanted for my first trip to York and only second trip travelling solo. The hotel was only a few minutes walk to the town centre and The Shambles, which was just what I wanted and it was so great that during a busy day that I could nip back to my room to drop off bags and/or freshen up before heading back out. It really is a brilliant location for anyone visiting York. The food, which I only had on one occasion as there was so much choice in York, was incredible and highly recommend even if you aren't staying, to pop in for dinner. You will not be disappointed at all! All around fantastic hotel, with a great location, food, price and friendly and helpful staff. Cannot wait to stay again, thank you

Easy to find, friendly staff, very good breakfast choices but not available til 9am. The room was small but very clean, nicely decorated. Curtains didn’t quite cover the window when closed. Slightly odd situation when we arrived, parked at the back and went in through the beer garden. Signed in at the bar and got the room keys and a key for back door which they said would be locked if we were out past pub closing time. We said we were going to get our bags from the car, when we turned round to come back in they’d locked the gate! We had to walk round the street to the front, when we explained they said “oh, we lock the gate after all the guests have checked in”?? Didn’t make sense to me, how would you get in at night if you can’t get to the back door. But other than that, good location, walking distance to lots of things.

When I checked in yesterday, the woman at the desk was so kind and helpful. My room was amazing! The hotel was amazing! I was so comfortable that I slept through breakfast and checked out at 11:00. I had hoped to leave early morning for site seeing, but I was just so comfortable. When I got to the desk to check out, I tried to express how much I loved the hotel, but the lady at the desk interrupted me and asked for payment. I tapped my card and tried to finish what I was saying, but then she yelled the payment was denied. I then insert my card and try to tell her yet again that I loved the hotel, but she interrupted me again and said, ”Here's your copy.” SO RUDE! She could care less! Sad that I had her to contend with on my way out from my lovely stay.

I visit York regularly and mostly stay in hotels. I decided to do something different this time and stay here. Checkin is through the pub downstairs. The two younger members of staff had no idea what to do when I arrived but the third member of staff took the lead to check me in and bring me to my room. Initial impression of the room was that it was nicely presented, clean and modern. However, I was simply shocked to find that my bathroom had no shower in it. I went back to reception and asked to be assigned a room with a shower but was told no other room was available. So, for the first time in many years, I stayed in a location that didn’t even have the most basic of facilities. If I knew this before I booked here, I certainly wouldn’t have made the booking. In the morning, I asked to have breakfast. It was cooked to order and was delicious. The lady who served me was very efficient and friendly. There’s no air conditioning in the room so I had to have a fan running all night to try to stay cool. So, would I stay here again? Probably not, I’m afraid. The lack of basic facilities is a complete show stopper for me.

I'm not one to write bad reviews but this place really needs sorting out! I went with my partner for her birthday to a place we both agreed looked great, however the pictures are very deceiving. The bed was uncomfortable and we hardly slept, not to mention the fact it was on wheels and with a broken headboard which the staff member was aware of, the bathroom was very small and the shower is lower than 6ft at it's highest, the cobwebs were seen in the corner by my partner and this was ”The BEST room” The receptionist tried to rectify the problems we had with that room and they gave us another room (opened the wrong room where someone was sleeping, thinking it was empty) and then took us to the empty room, this room was tiny and had mould in the corner and the worst part was the door lock wouldn't lock properly!! Tired and very disappointed we decided to leave a day earlier! Stayed at the Marriot which we should have done in the first place, we lost a day of parking and no refund for that or the 2nd day we didn't stay there. After emailing them after, I got no reply even though they replied to the emails I sent about when I booked there enquiring about face masks and check in times. Very unprofessional and the only place I have wanted to leave early. Highly recommend to just stay at the Marriot and you'll be happier. If this place were to reply to my email it would have had a plus point but unfortunately it's all bad. Just stay away from there.

2519 Great value for money Review of Astor York Pending review I was heading to York for the Christmas market and, knowing that I would spend most of my time out and about, wanted my accommodation to be as inexpensive as possible. A weekend at the Astor York set me back less than £40, and I would say I'm grateful I stayed here for more reasons than just the low price. I hadn't realised that the Christmas market closes quite early, and I found myself back at the hostel earlier than I anticipated. Luckily, there is a common area where you can watch Netflix with the other guests – a nice treat at the end of a cold day. I was admittedly a bit taken aback by the very old-fashioned bathrooms that look straight out of the 1960s. But the hostel was clean and well-maintained. My 30-bed dorm did not feel too crowded, and I was grateful for the cages under beds. My one gripe about the dorm room would be a lack of sockets and lights at beds; it was impossible to charge my phone as I was on the top bunk, so I had to charge it in the common area instead. While I only needed to use the fridge, it looked like the kitchen was well-stocked and spacious. There was also a little bar that did happy hour, though I never made it back early enough to take advantage. The location is a bit of a walk from York's city centre. However, it's quite an easy route, and it's also convenient for accessing the train station. I recommend getting up and out a bit earlier and walking along the ancient wall from Micklegate, which is not far from the hostel. Overall, my stay was great value for money and I'd recommend Astor York to any solo travellers.

I held my ‘significant’ birthday party at the Parsonage and it was fabulous. I had the Crystal Suite which was perfect for my 40+ guests with a 6 piece live band and dance floor. All of the planning and preparation was seamless, with the team being flexible, efficient and helpful. We had 15 bedrooms, at a special rate, for guests who wanted to stay over. The team couldn’t do enough for us on the night. The food was delicious and all the guests complimented it. The service was both friendly and efficient. We had an absolutely top night and the whole event was great value for the quality we received. I’d heartily recommend for an event.

A fantastic hotel. Check in was easy with friendly staff. Our room was very clean, modern and comfortable. Rooms come with and iron and ironing board and a hairdryer. Plus in the bathroom there’s toiletries. This was an ideal location it was close to everything. Within 5 minutes or less we were at the shambles. The shambles car park is a short walk away and you get 20% discount if staying at the hotel. Breakfast at the hotel was delicious with a wide variety of choice, there’s even a waffle maker with a good choice of toppings. We opted to go for breakfast around 7 am as we are early birds plus we like to beat the queues/ rush. We did see how busy it can get later on so I would recommend earlier the better. We will definitely be staying here again hopefully can get an adjoining room as our kids will be coming with us.

Myself, my son (11 years) and our puppy Hugo and my parents had the privilege of staying in this hotel for 2 nights whilst we had a 2 day city break in York. The staff are extremely welcoming, so friendly, happy to help and fun. The reception area is awesome with so many games and books to read we never had a dull moment. The staff were so good with Hugo, which was a bonus that we could bring our puppy and feel so welcome we would love to come back and stay. The beds are so comfy, massive flat screen tv in rooms, lovely showers and really cool deign in rooms we loved it. The staff really went out of there way too help in anyway they would and gave us a really friendly Advice in where to go too to eat and see th sights of York. Our room was cleaned beautifully and we enjoyed sitting out in the courtyard for our complimentary drinks on our last night. Wonderful ! What more can you ask for :) thanks everyone you made it very special for us all :)

I stayed here for 2 nights whilst visiting friends in York. My room was room 8 on ground floor. Room very clean and had everything you need, kettle, cups, glasses, Coffee, tea and milk, sugar. I took my own mug with me as prefer a bigger cup. The bed and pillows were very comfortable .Room had small TV (Which did come on randomly at 6am one morning, not sure if I knocked the control or whether it was set up to come on by a previous guest) The ensuite had everything you need with a few small shower gels, soaps and shampoo. Powerful shower. Car parking outside was good. I sat in the lounge both nights and it was also comfortable and had a bigger TV. I didn't have breakfast as had plans both days. Would definitely stay again in my next trip to York. Thank you!

We booked this hotel for a 3 day get away to York. The hotel is well situated off Tadcaster Road, near a woodland path which leads to York racecourse, so is very popular for those who go to the horse racing. Free parking is given on the hotel’s ground, but be warned make sure you go to reception and put in your car registration details in their computerised system otherwise you will be issued with a parking fine from the company who operates CCTV monitoring for the hotel. We booked the hotel through the IHG website, as an IHG Gold member we were given an option of an early checkin for a fee of £20.00 and an upgrade of £45.00. We took advantage of both offers, subject to availability on arrival. Unfortunately this wasn’t possible on arrival, and we weren’t able to check in until nearly 3pm. We were given the upgrade of a room on the top floor. The room had a small fridge with complimentary water and a chocolate bar, slippers, and dressing gowns. The toiletries, conditioner, shampoo, body lotion, are all in fixed to the wall containers. The bath room had a large walk in shower which was quite powerful, but space to hang towels, put personal toiletries was very minimal, and I was thankful that I took a plastic shoe type hold-all and a suction hook which I attached to the shower door to put our toiletries in, otherwise they would have cluttered the sink area. The bathroom was very small, and the door needs to be closed to get any room to do what is necessary in the bathroom. We booked a deal of dinner bed and breakfast. This was a disaster. We went for dinner and just about everything on the menu wasn’t available. Eventually we ordered a burger and chips. After about 30 minutes the food arrived. It was the worse burger and chips I have ever tasted. The burger was burnt on the outside, raw in the middle, the bun was burnt, the chips were very brown, which tasted of fat. We picked at the food as we were so hungry but it wasn’t nice, and hardly edible, in fact what I ate made me feel quite sick afterwards. We complained to reception, who apologised, and said that chefs in York were really hard to employ, and offered to refund the dinner to our account. We said that if this was the case, we would rather not eat dinner in the hotel, and could they please refund the dinner portion from our account for the rest of the stay. We had breakfast for the next 3 mornings, but it wasn’t marvellous, often dishes weren’t refilled when emptied. Some staff didn’t seem to know what they were doing, and others didn’t seem to be that bothered, or concerned, about the guests in the hotel, possibly some more customer service training could be beneficial all round. For the remainder of the stay we ate our evening meal in the pub across the road, which was really good. We felt that the standard of the hotel has deteriorated since we were there a couple of years ago. Would we go back? Possibly not, unless standards improved, and the hotel gets a m

My wife and I were staying overnight in York and stayed at this hotel. Everything was so seamless, check in, showed to our room which was a pleasant change. The room was more than adequate for one night, instant Wi-Fi was available too. We had a dinner reservation and both opted for the “roast”. It was a delicious meal and dome of the best roast beef I have ever had. A good selection of vegetables were available as well. My wife had the “figgy” pudding whilst I opted for the best crème brûlée I have ever had. We were served by Nicole who was so helpful throughout. Good choice of breakfast this morning after a lovely “rainwater” shower in the bathroom. It’s not cheap but you really do get what you pay for. We have stayed here on three occasions in the past but not for a few years. We would not hesitate in coming back here.

Awful stay, sleep deprived because we had a faulty fire alarm screaming alarms into our ears and the last night and following day were completely ruined for us negating the whole point of a short two day city break. Fire alarm was faulty and repeatedly went off during the night, screeching into your ears starting at 10 pm, if that doesn’t sound like fun to you, avoid, especially as the issue wasn’t fixed when we left. Alarm issues started on Sunday morning but didn't seem to be passed onto staff on Sunday evening and were not dealt with or forwarded. Fire alarm went off on Sunday night at 10pm which should have registered a major issue but rather than deal with it, roomzzz just left it. I rang the member of staff on duty and told him it needed silencing due to him saying it was a faulty sensor and i informed him it had gone off before that day of which he was not aware. He simply wasn't trained to do it or trained in escalation and simply left it, having already disturbed everyone at 10pm on a Sunday night which is ultimately managements fault for not making sure staff understood what to do in emergency situations. Faulty alarm then predictably woke everybody up at 2am which i told the member of staff the first time we didn’t want to be woken up again, then at half 2 and then it went off again a few times when the staff member finally decided to get the manager out of bed, which should have happened when the issue first appeared on Sunday morning or at the very least sorted at 10pm when it went off at 10pm Sunday evening. To top it off it went off again Monday morning at 11am. The Manager was nice but full of the usual excuses which i just were not buying, she said it could have been handled better but it was handled at all, it was amateur at roomzzz York. Its likely still faulty as i type this due to the alarm company clearly not being called out. She said there was not a lot that could be done because it’s the fire alarm which is just…a lie, the zone or faulty sensor should have been isolated on the system. Again lack of knowledge on what to do from management. To top it off we had someone hammering away on Monday morning at 11 am, clearly nobody communicates who is in what rooms. Other than that the stay was standard though not to the quality we had when we visited the Chester roomzzz aparthotel. TV was faulty when we booked in which was a minor inconvenience but nothing compared to having screeching faulty fire alarms shocking you out of bed. Awful experience and we rushed home due to been knackered because my partner couldn’t get back to sleep, rather than enjoying the day out in York.

What a gem of a hotel. I booked this purely on location convenience and I’m so glad I came across it. I will definitely stay again on journeys and would book just to have a break there because of its proximity to so much beautiful countryside and attractions. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming even though I was a late check in on my first night. The hotel is warm and cosy throughout and the room was beautiful. It was clean and traditionally decorated with a modern twist. There were some lovely little personal touches there which made me feel really at home. I slept really well on a comfy bed and it was nice and quiet. Breakfast was superb. No self service ‘hot’ buffet here. There was continental but, what I find a rarity these days, the hot menu was all cooked to order and of very high quality ingredients. There was even tea and coffee actually brought to me instead of a self service machine. I ate in the restaurant the second night and the food was fantastic. Can’t recommend highly enough for a hotel experience where you feel genuinely welcome and cared for as a guest.

The interior decoration of this youth hostel is nice and the price is relatively affordable. Because there are many tourists in York on weekends, the beds are limited. I reluctantly booked a mixed room for 6 people, but I was unlucky because I seemed to be the only woman in the room, and there was a man who snored loudly, talked to himself, and got up at 3 o'clock in the morning and turned on the light, which made the sleeping experience very bad. It should be noted that the toilet and bathroom in this youth hostel are very small and are shared by 6 people in the room, not the kind of shared on the same floor, which is very inconvenient.

The location of the hotel is pretty good. The castle is just outside the door. It takes more than 10 minutes to walk to the train station and more than 400 meters to the Shambles Street. The cottage has enough space for us all (7 of us) to relax and breakfast together. The space (inside and out) is much bigger than expected. All the rooms are beautifully appointed and the kitchen in the cottage is very well equipped. Very homely and comfortable. Beautiful views. Jeanne is a lovely lady - very friendly and helpful.

Lovely friendly staff on the desk to greet you. Our room was much more than we were expecting, it was very spacious, clean and the bed was very comfy. We had a great nights sleep considering the hotel is on a busy road we didn’t hear any noise. The breakfast in the morning was lovely and there is plenty of selection. Its only a 5 minute walk to the minster. We found everything within walking distance. We will definitely stay again.

We come every year between Xmas and new year for a short break and this year, even as we stepped through the front doors noticed a difference. Guests now have to pay to park at the hotel (£7.99 a night), the coffees at breakfast is no longer brought to the table, and no freshly made omelettes anymore! Rooms are not maintained each day by housekeeping, so after two nights we had to approach reception to ask them to empty our bins and replenish teas/coffees in the room. Front desk staff were friendly though staff at the leisure centre less so- quite abrupt in their manner! While we love it here for convenience we might look at alternative hotels in York next year!

Would recommend this to anyone wanting to stay in York. Less than 10 minutes walk from the city walls. Rooms are above a pub that serves food. Excellent pricing compared to others. Clean well appointed rooms. Staff were friendly and helpful. Free parking also which most others don't offer!

Beautifully furnished rooms throughout. Comfy beds, well cooked and presented breakfast with a wide choice - something for everyone. Staff very helpful with local bus/taxi details and information for exploring York with somewhat disabled people included. We did not want for anything and the car park was such a boon for us.

I don't get the bad reviews that I've seen, seriously! I arrived early and was greeted in the most friendliest manner possible! Checked in early into a nice clean room with everything you need. I had a takeout past midnight and my door closed (rookie mistake) I rang the owner and within 2 minutes I was back in my room with no quarms. He was totally OK with it. I will definitely stay here again. I stayed at there sister hotel last year and had no problems. Really enjoyed my stay, thank you so much.

It's a typical hostel, but it's cheap, clean, and the staff are kind. Difficult points are about 30 minutes walk from the station, difficult to manage valuables because it is a hostel, and no breakfast.

This was a treat from me to myself. I had a fabulous time at Middlethorpe Hall. From the spa to the dinner to the breakfast and treatment the next morning. It was a dream. The garden is also very pleasant to walk around and every single staff member I crossed paths with made sure I felt welcome. I highly recommend!

We booked slightly conerned that there might be disturbing noise from the busy road..but absolutely delighted with how quiet the Grantham Arms is! Both from inside and out! Staff welcomed us warmly and we were soon settled into our clean, well appointed, comfortable room for a four night stay. All our meals were a delight, the menu varied, catering for my dietry requirements perfectly. Even better, coeliac was properly understood and Joe even provided extra GF breakfast cereal for me! Friends who enjoy dining out where good food is available came to join us from Wetherby for one lunch, were equally impressed. The whole short break was excellent and we shall, all being well, look forward to staying again.

Would definitely recommend this hotel, the staff are very friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. The waiters were chatty and brilliant hosts. Service was excellent. Hotel was very clean. Would stay again. Great location, quiet but not far from York centre. Great bird sanctuary next to the hotel, definitely worth a visit. Very impressed all round. Stay was well priced, couldn’t believe value for money as everything met or above expectations when we got there. Great place to stay.

We have just returned after a 2 night stay. As some of the first guests to use this site we were impressed with the set up. We had electric hook up. There was spotless toilets and showers in the main stable blocks . Loads of hot water and pot washing facilities outside. There was a communal room where large screen TVs and breakfast was available to purchase in the mornings. Everything from fresh fruit , cereal , or the full English. We were well looked after by the team there and nothing seemed a problem for them. Very warm and welcoming. Plenty of refuse bins available and a warden who made regular walk rounds. It’s about a 5 min taxi ride to the centre of York but just outside the gate there is a Chinese takeaway, fish and chip shop and two decent pubs. A local shop is a couple of hundred yards down the road. They also have rooms to rent which seemed very reasonably priced and again spotlessly clean. We stayed with family in 3 tents and we all agree we would not hesitate to go back. Well worth a visit if your exploring York and the surrounding area. Thank you for a great weekend .
