Went on a surprise staycation this weekend for my birthday at the brand new Hotel Magdalena. This place really impressed me- I’m surprised to be the first reviewer. Magdalena is right off South Congress Avenue, but it feels like an oasis all on its own. The whole hotel has a cool retro 70s aesthetic- with the lobby and features of the room like old school lamps and our exposed wood balcony as stand outs. That’s a difficult era to pull off, but I think they did it well. Everyone was warm and friendly at check in, and they had plenty of dog treats for the pooch. Shout out to Ryan at the desk. As far as the room, I loved the blue tile bathroom and our view of the skyline. The bed was a little firm, but we still got a good night’s sleep. As far as COVID, everyone was wearing masks and signs were posted all around the buildings, and I saw staff cleaning public areas multiple times during my stay. They also have time slots (2 hours) for guests to use the pool. I’m guessing this is to limit guest contact. Favorite highlights included the large pool in the middle of the courtyard (heated, with LED lights) and the restaurant, Summer House on Music Lane. The food is out-of-this-world good. If you stay here, have a meal- you won’t regret it. We got the steak and the bass with cocktails. Amazing. Our server, Laura, was knowledgeable and accommodating too. Right off of South Congress, amenities that can’t be beat, and dog-friendly- Hotel Magdalena is a real gem in the heart of Texas. I look forward to staying again!

Hotel Magdalena is a cool new hotel with a funky vibe in a great location for exploring Austin and being right in the middle of the vibrant South Congress St. My stay was during COVID and the protocols in place felt very safe. The room was extremely clean and I appreciated housekeeping only coming in to my room upon request. All of the staff at the hotel were fabulous. So helpful, kind and welcoming. The Summer House is delicious and it was nice to be able to eat outside and distanced from all other guests. I have had a few stays at this hotel during visits to Austin and I recommend a porch studio - they seem to have a little more privacy than some of the other rooms. The way the windows are laid out does not leave much opportunity to keep the shades open. Overall, it is a great hotel with a cool and modern vibe in an awesome location.
