This time I booked it completely with a try, but the feeling after check-in really did not disappoint me: First of all, let’s talk about the location: the hotel is on the upper reaches of the Gero River. On the hillside of the west bank, a bird's eye view of Gero is completely unobstructed. If you want to go to Gero Onsen Street or the station, you can ask the hotel attendant to drive there at any time and make an appointment to return to the hotel in advance. The driver will wait at the station on time, and these are free. Second, the hotel’s service is still very good, but the disadvantage is that English is not good. There is only one girl who is Indian and can speak simple English. The other waiters can only communicate in Japanese. The hotel has no waiters who can speak Chinese. There is a slight obstacle to communication. This is also the different positioning of the hotel and the Yunoshima Pavilion. The Yuzhidao Pavilion is full of the voices of Chinese and Taiwanese. Finally, I found on major travel software that some of the hotel’s names were Songyue and some were Zhangyue, but in fact, this hotel only has a Japanese name, which translates to a string of Japanese words called Tonight Starry Sky or something. In short, it is worth recommending and worth coming again.

We’ve extremely grateful to the hosts for their outstanding service and hospitality from the heart. Loved the thoughtfully varied menu for each meal.
The establishment is spotlessly clean and excellently maintained. Each morning, our towels and yukata (hotel gowns) were replaced. So were the amenities ( fragrant green tea packs, snacks). The housekeeping staff even offered to mop our rooms after only one night’s stay.
The wifi was also fast and sustained well in the guest room and public lounge areas. There are facilities to cater to a wide range of age groups from seniors like us and children too. There were ample resting chairs in the lounge and on the way to the historian’s well as guest rooms.
The best facility was the hot springs! They are
exactly as depicted in the hotel website. Numerous indoor pools of various temperature all have the renowned ‘beautifying’ odorless alkaline water. My skin felt so smooth and moisturized after only one soak.
What’s more the hot springs stay open for in-house guests from 10.30 am to 11 pm and day-trip visitors from 10.30 am to 8 pm. In-house guests can also use the hotsprings early from 6 to 9 am. There is a European dry sauna as well as wet steam rooms in both make and female hotspring areas.
We would love to stay here again!

I found the hotel and chose the room type when I arrived. There was a small problem because it seemed like the hotel asked to check first and waited for 10 minutes. I got a room on the 10th floor. It was big and had a beautiful view. The onsen was very very good. It was a mixed room separated by gender on the 8th floor. There were both rooms and open-door access to the outdoor. The view of the snow was fluffy. It was suitable for all ages. Children and the elderly loved it. The breakfast was varied, but too salty for me... In conclusion, I was not tired anymore and was impressed. I want to stay again.
Note: The bathroom seemed to be cold water. We had to use the hot water in the shared bathroom (onsen).
- I couldn't find the water in the room. There was only a kettle with cold water for boiling water.

Service was next to nothing, staff offered Salmon sushi and malt tea at no extra cost as I choosed to skip breakfast to catch up with early bus schedule. The room was very clean and quite spacious.
Dinner and breakfast was in Kaiseki style. The food was excellent, particularly the sashimi and the Hida beef (both grilled and sukiyaki).The use of local ingredients added to the uniqueness of the experience.
The onsen was not big but cozy. Considering the hotel has about 20 rooms only, it offer very good privacy and I enjoyed the public bath twice alone in my 2 days stay. Rental private bath was a good surprise and worth to try if you are traveling in pair.
Location is a bit far from train and bus station up on the top of the hill, but the the pickup service and a nice view of the mountain compensated for that.

There are 3 public onsen choices in different buildings. The room is large but poor ventilation system as stinky smell comes from the bathroom.

Nous arrivons dans une magnifique demeure entièrement détruite dans une autre région et reconstruite pièce par pièce à son emplacement actuel, dont les propriétaires éprouvent une immense fierté.
Nous sommes accueillis par une famille dynamique, joyeuse, ouverte et généreuse, aimant accueillir et offrir le meilleur à leurs invités.
Passée une belle réception, s’ouvre un salon avec le foyer traditionnel au centre. Les chambres sont très belles, spacieuses, dans lesquelles nous préparons et rangeons nous-mêmes nos futons comme de coutume dans un Minshuku. Les Yukatas à disposition sont beaux et confortables et une couche épaisse peut être mise par dessus par temps froid.
A peine arrivés, nous avons été invités à nous baigner et à profiter des bains en couple, moyennant de mettre un petit panneau indiquant que nous prenons un bain en famille, si charmant. Les salles de bains sont magnifiques, toute de bois de cèdre, avec une vaste baignoire en métal.
Il y a également la possibilité d’y faire une lessive, très appréciable pour un voyage backpack.
Tout est propre et sent bon. Le lieu invite volontiers à des rencontres avec les autres convives. L’esprit ouvert des hôtes est communicatif et rend chaque instant unique et ouvre au partage. Tout est fait pour se sentir chez soi, en famille ou entre amis.
Les repas offerts sont copieux et délicieux. Nous avons eu droit à une shabu shabu variée et de nombreux petits plats autour, tous préparés avec le plus grand soin et des ingrédients de qualité. Le petit déjeuner n’était pas en reste, copieux et savoureux.
De plus, vin, bières et surtout sakés régionaux d’excellente qualité sont offerts à prix très doux pour parfaire la visite gustative.
Après le repas, nous avons été invités à une démonstration / initiation de pliage et découpe de papier dont le propriétaire des lieux est expert depuis 41 ans, le tout amené avec humour dans des conversations riches et ouvertes.
Ce lieu mériterait un roman complet mais nous nous arrêterons là. Pour faire bref, nous avons adoré et Akakabu se trouve en très bonne place sur nos carnets de voyages pour y retourner dès que nous en aurons l’occasion! Mille mercis pour tout!

Unfortunately, my experience at this hot spring hotel did not meet expectations. The dinner service was particularly lacking. The food had already been set up in the room before we arrived, and the waiter offered minimal assistance, only asking if we had lit the fire. There was no explanation of the dishes, nor was a menu provided. To make matters worse, the necessary cutlery for different courses was repeatedly overlooked, which detracted from the overall dining experience. The food itself was unremarkable and didn’t compare to what other hot spring hotels typically offer.
The private onsen also posed a challenge. The water switch was broken, leaving no way to adjust the temperature or water flow, resulting in water that was uncomfortably hot throughout our stay. Breakfast the next morning was very basic and lacked the variety or creativity I’ve come to expect from similar establishments. Overall, the hotel did not live up to the standards I’ve experienced elsewhere and left much room for improvement.

This is an original hot spring hotel with a century of history, full of human touch and warmth. Most of them are Japanese locals who come to soak in the hot springs by themselves. The hotel owner and staff do not speak English at all. They rely on the lame translation machine➕sign language to communicate. When entering the store, they will first make an appointment for the bath time, which is only 40 minutes. It seems that there is no need to make an appointment outside. For breakfast, all Japanese-style home cooking is exquisite and there are many types. After taking you to the room, Obasan was very polite. He felt sorry for us because the room was still cold. There were two hot water bottles in the bed.
Quanyuekan is named for the high concentration of carbonated springs. The two pools have a lower temperature inside and a higher temperature outside. There is hot spring water at the entrance of the male bath that you can drink directly. It is soda water. The mask paper is provided, you can go directly in to get the hot spring water to apply, or you can feel the bubbling under the bottom, and the skin will be slippery after soaking.

There are only two showers in the open-air hot spring, and only shampoo and conditioner are provided. The rest of the makeup remover and facial cleanser are provided by yourself. The next day, I basically reserved the open-air hot spring and felt very comfortable soaking in the drizzle.

The hotel is very winding and you have to carry your suitcase a long way. There are stairs in the middle, and then take the elevator, and then walk up the inner stairs and take the elevator to get to the room! People with large suitcases should consider carefully.

The staff was very helpful in explaining the hotel layout and where our meals would take place, and made sure we understood before leaving. The dinner and breakfast service were amazing, the ingredients were very fresh and delicious. Their hotel has an outdoor foot bath with towels provided which I enjoyed immensely. The hotel is very clean and has shuttle service which was convenient since it is on a hill. We enjoyed our stay very much.
