The San Francisco Kitka Community Choir is proud to present its Winter 2024 Series, led by the esteemed Kristine Barrett. This four-week session will take place on Tuesdays from 7:35-9:30 PM, starting on February 6th and ending on February 27th. Located at the Kanbar Performing Arts Center on 44 Page Street, San Francisco, CA 94102, this event promises to be a captivating exploration of polyphonic vocal traditions from various cultural regions, including Caucasus Georgia, the Baltics, and Nordic lands. Singers of all genders and ages are welcome to join this unique community of practice.

Under the guidance of director Kristine Barrett, participants will delve into an array of enchanting musical genres, ranging from Estonian runic songs to Georgian table songs. Each rehearsal series will not only focus on enhancing ensemble skills, but also on fostering a profound connection between the singers and the cultures from which the music originates. With her extensive background in folkloric studies and a Master's degree in Folklore from UC Berkeley, Kristine Barrett will provide valuable insights into the literature, folklore, history, and material culture associated with each song.

Throughout the Winter 2024 Series, singers will have the opportunity to refine their vocal techniques, including blending, breathwork, pitch, dynamics, and pronunciation. Additionally, the choir will explore thought-provoking themes related to tradition in the modern world and the ethics of cultural representation and practice. No previous experience is necessary, although the ability to match pitch and sing in tune is preferable.

As long as you come to San Francisco, you have to come to the Golden Gate Bridge to punch in.
