Details

The future of storytelling is here... On January 15, Bookends & Beginnings will host bestselling and award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor for a talk about her exhilarating new novel Death of the Author at Nichols Concert Hall in Evanston. A testament to the power of storytelling and a poignant exploration of what makes us human, this story is unlike anything you've read before. Nnedi will be in conversation with podcast host and interviewer Greta Johnsen. When a disabled Nigerian American woman pens a wildly successful sci-fi novel, her newfound fame presents new challenges as she loses control of her own narrative. Surprisingly funny, deeply poignant, and endlessly discussable, this is at once the tale of a woman on the margins risking everything to be heard and a reckoning with the stories and histories we leave behind. Nnedi Okorafor is an international award-winning New York Times bestselling novelist of science fiction and fantasy. Born in the United States to Nigerian immigrant parents, Nnedi is known for drawing from African cultures to create captivating stories. Nnedi has received the World Fantasy, Nebula, and multiple Hugo Awards, amongst others, for her books. Champions of her work include Ngugi wa Thiong’o, George RR Martin, and Rick Riordan. Nnedi holds a PhD in Literature, two Master’s Degrees (Journalism and Literature) and lives in Phoenix, Arizona with her daughter Anyaugo. Greta Johnsen is an interviewer, podcast host, and book person. She co-hosts HBO's Official Game of Thrones Podcast: House of the Dragon and writes the GRETAGRAM newsletter on Substack. For eleven years, she hosted WBEZ's Nerdette podcast, an interview show with a book club. This event will be held off-site, at Nichols Concert Hall. Your ticket includes a signed copy of Death of the Author. Doors open for this event at 6:00 PM and the event will run from 7:00 - 8:00 PM.
