Details

Join the Fowler Museum at UCLA for an enlightening gallery conversation featuring exhibition advisor Ysamur Flores-Peña and artist Patrisse Cullors. This engaging event will also include a walk-through of the thought-provoking exhibition, "The House Was Too Small: Yoruba Sacred Arts of Africa and Beyond." During the in-gallery discussion, Flores-Peña and Cullors will delve into the fascinating topic of gender and sexuality within the pantheon of divinities worshipped in Yoruba belief. These divine beings, known as Orichas, Orixas, or Orishas, are depicted in various art forms throughout the Black Atlantic, representing spirits, personified natural forces, or deified ancestors. Flores-Peña is a highly respected elder and expert in Lucumí traditions, with a wealth of knowledge and experience in African-based religions. As an associate professor at Otis College of Art and Design, he has published extensively on Lucumí culture and ritual aesthetics, as well as identity construction within Lucumí narratives, rituals, arts, and theology. Cullors, a renowned author, educator, artist, and abolitionist, brings a unique perspective to the conversation. Her work has been showcased in prestigious venues worldwide, including The Broad, the Hammer Museum, and the Fowler Museum at UCLA. Through her practice, she blends spirituality and activism, with a focus on what she calls "Abolitionist Aesthetics." Don't miss this opportunity to engage with two influential voices in the art world. The event will take place at the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles, California, on February 22, 2024. Admission is free, allowing everyone to experience this enriching conversation on the intersection of art, spirituality, and social justice. Visit the Fowler Museum website for more information.
