The Arthur Ross Gallery is excited to announce that Alison Saar, a highly acclaimed sculptor, mixed-media, and installation artist, will be presenting the annual Susan T. Marx Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, October 5, 2023. In her remarkable body of work, Saar delves into a range of profound themes, such as gender, race, and spirituality, from personal, societal, and historical perspectives. With a deep appreciation for materiality and craftsmanship, Saar's pieces often draw inspiration from folk art traditions. Saar's artistic journey began with a BA in art history and studio art from Scripps College in 1978, followed by an MFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 1981. Her extraordinary talent has garnered recognition through prestigious accolades, including the Studio Museum Artist in Residence, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a United States Artists Fellowship, and multiple National Endowment for the Arts Artist Fellowships. Her compelling artwork has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions across the globe, including renowned institutions like the Hammer Museum, Galerie Lelong, and the National Museum for Women in the Arts. Notably, Saar's captivating creations have found a permanent home in esteemed collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center, and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
