Tambor y Caña and the Escuela de Tambores Afrovenezolanos y Percusión Afrolatina (E.T.A.P.A.) are two notable groups based in the heart of NYC that are bringing Afro-Latin experiences to the forefront. Rooted in Afro-Venezuelan drumming traditions, these groups are making a significant impact. Hailing from Aragua, Maracuyi, and Carabobo, Afro-Venezuelan immigrants have formed these groups not only for their passion for music but also to educate others. By hosting events and workshops, they aim to shed light on Afro-Venezuelan music, sound, and dance. Their performances go beyond mere entertainment; they serve as a poignant reminder of the history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Over 100,000 enslaved Africans were brought to Venezuela from regions like Angola, Senegal, Gambia, Benin, Nigeria, and Congo, and their legacy is deeply ingrained in the rhythmic traditions celebrated by these groups. Join us for an hour of conversation and performance with Afro-Venezuelan drummer Wille Quintana and the talented musicians of Tambor y Caña NYC! The event, titled "Afro-Venezuelan Drumming Diaspora in NYC," will take place on November 30, 2023, at Lehman College, CUNY, located at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West in The Bronx. Admission is free, so seize this opportunity to immerse yourself in the mesmerizing world of Afro-Venezuelan drumming.
