In these seven stories, Choi writes in a precise and unembellished style, to portrait the lives of young women in South Korea. The intimate is shown against sometimes a very complex political backdrop, but in a hopeful tone. In the title story, a friendship between an exchange student and her host sister follows them from adolescence to adulthood. In 'A Song from Afar', a young woman grapples with the death of her lover, travelling to Russia to search for information about the deceased. In 'Secret', the parents of a teacher killed in the Sewol ferry sinking hide the news of her death from her grandmother. Toji (토지) Book Club aims to explore Korean culture through novels and short stories to better understand the country's recent history, society dynamics and of course to enjoy the exceptional contemporary literature coming from South Korea. We have borrowed our name from Park Kyung-Ri’s novel, because we would like Toji to be a space to discover more about South Korea paying special attention to the female prospective. Her work is mainly figurative and revolves around empathy and emancipation from norms. She was shortlisted for the Zurich Portrait Prize 2023. He was the winner of the National Gallery of Ireland's Portrait Prize in 2021. Juliette Morrison is a multidisciplinary artist based in London. This introspective journey connects the individual experience to broader cultural and social contexts. Glenn Quigley is an author and artist originally from Tallaght in Dublin, and now living in Lisburn with his husband. His work in both print and paint celebrates the gay bear subculture. DABF Workshop: From the Tabletop Press to Counterpublishing, .pdf Magazine | Temple Bar Gallery + Studios

Dublin
Arts
Literary Arts
Collaboratively produce a publication through the use of prompts, questionnaires, dialogue, and collage. To foreground the workshop, the editors of .pdf magazine will include discussion on what, if anything, ‘counterpublishing’ means and their experience making a digital magazine. They aim to emphasise the value of spontaneity, detritus, locality, and community in ‘print cultures’ during the process of collectively making the publication. The workshop will begin with a set of prompts to collectively generate the content of a volume using whatever WiFi connected device you have, while discussing together what intentions or contexts can be brought to a publication. The second half of the workshop will focus on the editing and design stages, practicing iterative critical and aesthetic approaches, implementing collective input. Participants will leave with a volume of .pdf magazine to which they have contributed from start to finish, and a renewed vigour for the DIY and experimental in publishing. While the editors of .pdf magazine will lead the workshop, they hope to also learn from what participants contribute, building on their own understanding of .pdf magazine and a potential DIY ethos. This is an adult workshop, no experience necessary. Access information: Approximate duration is 2 hours. Accessible to all skill levels (including basic English). The workshop will be held in a wheelchair accessible ground floor studio space. There is a semi-accessible bathroom. For further access information please contact Learning + Public Engagement Curator Órla Goodwin. .pdfis a digital magazine that publishes new art and writing. Issue one can now be found at pdf-mag-pdf.com; issue two is forthcoming. Taking the digital as daily, .pdf magazine pushes to make writing free and pocketable, all while remaining bigger than life (and no less disposable/precious). The American composer, Robert Newell, has also written an extended solo guitar work for him. He is a regular performer at many international guitar festivals and has made recordings with K-Tel, Gael-Linn Records, CBA Classics, Ossiain Records, Castle Communications, a highly acclaimed CD of contemporary Irish music with Blackbox Music, England and a CD of the music of Irish composer John Buckley with the German company, Celestial Harmonies. He has also recorded with the Chieftains and famous Spanish Soprano Montserrat Caballes. He is also well known for his own delightful guitar arrangements of Irish music which appear on several of his many recordings. Concerts have taken him around the world and include appearances at the Sydney Opera House, the Old Opera House, Frankfurt, the L'Arena in Verona, and New York’s Carnegie Hall. Jimmy Smyth / Donal Kirk duo Navan native Jimmy Smyth once turned down an offer from Phil Lynott to join Thin Lizzy and was nominated for a Grammy in 1989. Jimmy has been playing guitar since he was 7 years old, initially with his father’s dance bands and later when his growing interest in rock and blues led him to form his own band at school. The first Jimmy Smyth band was formed when he was in his early teens, and opened for Thin Lizzy, Bees Make Honey, Horslips, and Frankie Miller. He was a guitarist/singer with The Bogey Boys from 1979 to 1983 and recorded several singles and two albums. He featured heavily in ‘Best Guitarist’ polls on Hot Press Magazine around this time, alongside guitarists like the Edge and Rory Gallagher. He is a Grammy-Nominee for his work with US Artist Toni Childs. The legendary guitarist has worked with some of the world’s finest musicians, including Van Morrison, Tony Childs, Roger Daltrey, Curtis Steigers, Chaka Khan, Lisa Stanfield, Gilbert O’ Sullivan, John Scofield and Jon Lord from Deep Purple with whom he played the 'Concerto for group and Orchestra' the year before he died! In the late 70s, Jimmy fronted the legendary Bogey Boys, who had U2 as their support!! Nowadays Jimmy plays also with The RTE Concert Orchestra, Frances Black, Donal Kirk and Mary Coughlan. As a producer, he has produced albums for The Spirit of Eden, Bonnie Tyler, Toni Childs, Rob Strong, Don Baker and Frances Black and composed music for the movies When the Sky Falls (2000) and Silent Grace (2002) and for the Fellowship of The Ring (2003) videogame. He has also recorded/played with Roger Daltrey, Curtis Stigers, Chaka Khan, Lisa Stansfield, Van Morrison Gilbert O’Sullivan and Reba McEntire. Jimmy has been Musical Director for RTE TV shows, and regularly performs with the RTE Concert Orchestra, the RTESO, The Ulster Orchestra and many others. Jimmy is very much in demand for touring/recording and, when not on the road can regularly be seen playing rock and roots or Jazz Rock with Fusion band ‘Spectrum’. Donal Kirk is a seasoned musician with an extraordinary talent. Donal is a great vocalist and, while likened to the styling of Michael McDonald, this still does not do him justice. Donal started playing solo gigs over 30 years ago. He started a band called JC's Soul Search with ex members of Granny's Intentions, then went on to join Dublin blues band, The Business, leaving to form a band with Brian Downey - Thin Lizzy's drummer. During these years, he kept doing his solo gigs. Now he still does both solo, duo and band gigs. Donal currently sings and plays guitar in a well established duo with Jimmy Smyth. Swimming Upstream (The O’Brien Press) charts author Patsy Peril’s mission to save the wild salmon in the Shannon and all over the Atlantic. He has campaigned restlessly on the subject for decades, working with the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation. Join Patsy in conversation with environmentalist Eoghan Daltun. He was awarded an Artist in the Community Scheme Project Realisation Award in 2015 and an Arts Council ‘Next Generation’ Bursary Award’ in 2016, in addition to an Arts Participation Bursary (2020).
