About SEVENTEEN

Why Not 17 Members? Many might assume that SEVENTEEN has 17 members based on their name, but the group actually consists of 13 members. The name SEVENTEEN represents “13 members + 3 different sub-units + 1 group,” symbolizing the diversity and unity of the team. The 13 members are S.COUPS, Jeonghan, Hoshi, Wonwoo, WOOZI, DK, Mingyu, Seungkwan, Dino, Joshua, Vernon, Jun, and THE 8.

【Three Sub-units + BSS】

The 13 members are divided into three sub-units: the Hip-Hop Team, the Vocal Team, and the Performance Team. The Hip-Hop Team consists of S.COUPS, Wonwoo, Mingyu, and Vernon. The Vocal Team includes Jeonghan, Joshua, WOOZI, DK, and Seungkwan. The Performance Team is made up of Hoshi, Jun, THE 8, and Dino.

Later, a surprise unit called “BSS” (BooSeokSoon) emerged, made up of Hoshi, DK, and Seungkwan. The group was formed when WOOZI, known as the “musical genius” of SEVENTEEN, decided to create music for them as a way to channel their boundless energy and enthusiasm—so he could have a little more peace. BSS exploded in popularity with their hit song Fighting and recently performed the romantic OST The Reasons of My Smiles for the drama The Queen of Tears. They debuted the song at the GOLDEN WAVE concert in Taiwan, much to the fans’ delight.

【Ofiicial Fandom name「CARAT」】

SEVENTEEN’s official fandom name is “CARAT,” the unit of measurement for diamond weight. This symbolizes that the more fans SEVENTEEN has, the more they shine like diamonds.

【 Official Debut in 2015】

Before debuting, SEVENTEEN and other trainees from their company, Pledis Entertainment, were known as "Pledis Boys." They performed under this name to gain exposure. On May 26, 2015, SEVENTEEN officially debuted through the reality show SEVENTEEN Project: Big Debut Plan during the showcase in Episode 7. Their first mini album, 17 Carat, was released at this time. Even then, member WOOZI had already demonstrated his musical talent, working as one of the album's producers. S.COUPS, Mingyu, and Vernon contributed to writing the lyrics.

【Famous for “Knife-Like” Choreography】

SEVENTEEN is well-known in the K-pop world for their "knife-like" choreography, a term used by fans to describe the group’s synchronized and precise dance moves. Despite having 13 members, their group dances are flawless, a testament to their hard work. They even succeeded in completing a two-times speed dance challenge on the Korean variety show Weekly Idol, dancing to their song Don’t Wanna Cry. The video of this performance garnered over 26 million views, showing just how popular the group is—even casual dance videos attract massive attention.

【Four MVs with Over 100 Million Views】

SEVENTEEN’s choreography isn’t the only thing that captivates fans—their catchy melodies leave a lasting impression too. Since their debut in May 2015, SEVENTEEN has sold over 10.13 million albums. Their 11th mini album, SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN, set a K-pop record for the highest first-week sales in history, selling over 5 million copies. The group also won their first-ever “Artist of the Year” award at the MAMA Awards in their 9th year and secured the “Best Push Performance” award at the 2022 MTV VMAs, the first Korean artists to do so.

Additionally, four of their music videos—Don’t Wanna Cry, CLAP, VERY NICE, and LEFT & RIGHT—have surpassed 100 million views on YouTube, a testament to their immense popularity.

【All-Rounder Idols: Writing, Composing, and Choreography】

SEVENTEEN has earned the title of “self-producing idols” because all 13 members bring their individual talents to the table. WOOZI is a musical prodigy, not only as an idol but also as a producer. Members of the Hip-Hop Team are also involved in songwriting. Their collective musical ability is immense—they handle songwriting, composing, and even choreographing their own performances. They also actively participate in planning their variety show GOING SEVENTEEN, which has become a beloved show even among non-fans for its humor and entertainment value. The group also appeared on Na PD’s The Game Caterers, which led to them securing the chance to film Youth Over Flowers with SEVENTEEN, another hit series.

【Breaking Out of a Small Company】

Pledis Entertainment, before being acquired by HYBE in 2020, was considered a small to mid-sized agency. When SEVENTEEN debuted, they weren’t expected to succeed on such a large scale. However, they defied expectations and rose to the top, earning the nickname “the miracle of a small company.”

Pledis previously launched After School and NU'EST, but still faced fierce competition in the K-pop industry. Despite this, Pledis pushed forward with SEVENTEEN, a 13-member boy group that trained in a basement practice room. Those who have seen Parasite know that basement rooms aren’t ideal, but SEVENTEEN worked hard under limited conditions and eventually debuted. Their past struggles have made their current success all the more meaningful.

【 Becoming Labelmates with BTS】

After being acquired by HYBE, SEVENTEEN became labelmates with BTS, receiving a boost in resources and facilities that positively impacted their careers. Media outlets have even dubbed them the "second BTS" due to their skyrocketing global popularity. Their world tour tickets have sold out across Asia and are now nearly sold out in Europe and North America, further proving their global appeal.

SEVENTEEN also became the first K-pop group to give a speech at UNESCO’s Youth Forum, an honor that highlights their international recognition.

【Breaking the 7-Year Curse with Full Group Contract Renewal】

Many K-pop groups face what’s known as the "7-year curse," where members often leave or the group disbands after their initial contracts expire (typically after seven years). However, SEVENTEEN defied this trend by announcing a full-group contract renewal in 2022, ahead of their contract expiration. This was a special gift to their fans, CARATs, who celebrated the news of their continued journey together.
