With Sapporo's main tourist sites concentrated neatly together, you can get easy access to most of the hot spots if you stay near the JR (railway) station or Tanukikoji shopping street. The city has numerous high-end boutique hotels that provide both comfortable amenities and a good base for outings. Not only is transportation convenient, but the hotels are unique sights too, both inside and out, so it's worth checking out some of the accommodations before you even set off.

The Sapporo Grand Hotel, which underwent renovation in December 2019, has excellent transportation access, and can be reached from JR Sapporo Station without even going overground, as the hotel has its own connecting walkway.

Founded in 1934, this was the first authentic Western-style hotel in Hokkaido. It boasts the first rooftop garden in all of Japan, a Kyoto-style garden with areas for tea ceremonies and relaxation. The hotel is split into three sections, the Main Building, the East Building, and the Annex Building, and the spacious guest rooms look out over Odori Park.

The hotel contains a memorial library—more like a museum—which gives an introduction to Hokkaido including the history of Sapporo and the Grand Hotel, key events in their past, and items on display. It also houses some 1,200 works by authors with strong ties to Hokkaido.

The lounge is furnished with a fireplace. In addition, the Northern Terrace restaurant serves a dessert buffet, while the Japanese restaurant AOI serves Japanese, Chinese, and Western cuisines focusing on Hokkaido delicacies, where guests can sample the freshest seasonal Hokkaidan dishes, seafood being the most popular.

The Cross Hotel Sapporo occupies an excellent downtown location, approximately 5 minutes from Sapporo station and 6 minutes from Odori station on foot, so transportation is convenient.

The delightful style of the city can be appreciated in the hotel itself: the Cross Hotel has always been renowned for its rich sense of design, with every room meticulously thought-out, and each equipped with its own bath. The most striking feature in the rooms is the fully transparent, intricately designed sink; the design sense is brought out in every detail.

There is a communal bathroom on the 18th floor looking out over the city, which has makeup remover and moisturizers made by Shiseido. The Italian restaurant on the 3rd floor serves fresh Hokkaidan dishes with organic vegetables.

The 5-star Hotel Okura Sapporo opened its doors in 1962. With its red-brick construction, it gives a distinct period-style impression.

The hotel's location is excellent, a minute's walk from Odori subway station and 5 minutes' walk from Susukino Entertainment District. Every guest room has a desk, refrigerator, flat-screen satellite TV, and en-suite bathroom with a bath and fully equipped with toiletries. The 140 sq. m. deluxe suites exude the harmonious atmosphere for which the country is renowned.

The Continental restaurant serves Western food, while Suginome serves Japanese cuisine, and Toh-ka-lin offers Cantonese dishes. The Shotmaker bar offers a huge range of cocktails and other drinks. Guests can also enjoy a drink in Lounge Precious.

The New Otani Inn Sapporo, built in the north European style, opened in 1982. It is located in central Sapporo, 5 minutes' walk from Odori Park and about 8 minutes' walk from JR Sapporo Station and the Sapporo Stella Place mall.

The floor and columns in the lobby are encrusted with ancient fossils, a romantic touch that may be of interest to visitors who are so inclined. There is a strikingly beautiful chapel on the 3rd floor that hosts weddings and has a transparent glass skylight, so the sunlight pours in during the daytime and the stars sparkle at night, making for a beautiful, romantic setting.

The hotel has both Chinese and Western restaurants, and the Rendezvous Lounge in the lobby serves a daily breakfast buffet and dinner buffet, as well as a wide variety of wines on weekends and holidays. Four Seasons serves Western, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine, and guests can also sip tea or enjoy a cocktail in the atmospherically lit Oak Room.
