Designed and built by local architects John and Benjamin Green, the Royal Theatre opened in February 1837 as the famous opera "Merchant of Venice". In 1899, it was caught fire while performing Shakespeare's play Macbeth, and reopened in 1901. The Royal Theatre was overhauled in 2011 and recreated the retro style of the opening in 1901. Theatre currently features opera, drama, musicals and more.
