Metekhi St. Virgin Church

We walked through the European Square and first visited the Metec Church on the nearby high ground. The interior of this old church is simple, but its historical value is not simple, because it was once held in prison in the Soviet era as a great writer Comrade Gorky, whom we knew from childhood. In front of the church is a large sculpture of the father of Georgia, the Wachtanger I of the Kingdom of Liberia, Georgia, which is said to be the origin of the city of Tbilisi. Take a break in front of the Metec Church, overlooking the European Square, the flowing Kula River, and the large sculpture of the Mother of Georgia at the top of the hillside not far away. This hillside is called Surolaq, located above the old town of Tbilisi.

On the riverside, opposite the old city, on a hill in the upper city, you can see the banks of the river and the fortress and the statue of the mother from the church. The view is very good. There is also a Peace Bridge. Sitting on the bench at the entrance of the church, it feels really great to see this city. Unfortunately, the cable car is being repaired. There are a lot of big dogs at the church door, don't bite, don't be afraid.

The Metschich Church is located on a high ground on the banks of the Kula River, where the statue of King Wahtanger I stands, the building that was originally used for forts for centuries, then used as a church, prison, and now restored to its use. The interior of the building is small and the decoration is extremely simple. From the high ground, you can see the Sulorac Peak Cable Car across the road.

The Metsi Church was first built in the 5th century. Although it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, it has still maintained its original style. This is really rare. "Metsi" means the surrounding area of the palace. I don't know if it is next to the palace at the earliest. The Metes Church was used as a prison in the Soviet era, and many celebrities who had lived there, including the famous Soviet writer, poet, critic, political critic, and scholar Gorky, were re-entered after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In front of the church was the father of Georgia: a statue of the Iberian king of Georgia, Vachtan I, who was said to have been hunting in the area in the 5th century, and the falcon was injured and healed (another said to have been burned to death). The king was amazed and cut down the forest to build the city. The church of Metsi was located in Tbilisi, the earliest city.
