伊豆石の採石場跡
加工し易く耐火性に優れた石材として知られる伊豆石の採石場跡です。昼なお暗い洞窟内は、日中のみ見学者用に電気がつけられていますが滑りやすいところもあり目の悪い方には注意が必要です。訪れたときには無数の蟹が道を往来していました。洞窟を抜けた先の海の眺望も綺麗でした。

江戸城の石垣にも使われた石切り場の跡です。
伊豆半島が海底火山として噴火を繰り返していた時に海底に堆積した火山灰が凝灰岩となります。やがて伊豆半島は隆起しこの凝灰岩は「伊豆石」と呼ばれ、船を使って江戸城の築城(石垣)にも使われたそうです。昭和30年頃まで石切り場として使われたのが室岩堂だそうで、観光客向きに整備されました。石切場の地層、石切りの跡を見ることができます。遊歩道も整備がされていますが、照明はあっても懐中電灯がある方がよいと思いま...
