Archaeological excavations have confirmed that the first attempts of ancient man to explore the underground spaces in this area dated back to 3000 AD. They have repeatedly been found in caves:ancient tools;mummified human remains;parts of clothes and dishes.The cave got its name due to the external similarity of the stone piles at the entrance with a fantastic dragon's head. According to popular legend, the caves were used by Templars and pirates who kept their treasures inside. However, there is still no scientific evidence for this.The first historically recorded evidence of cave exploration dates back to 1339, when the island's authorities sponsored an expedition aimed at finding Templar treasures. The expedition was unsuccessful and the caves were forgotten.They were remembered again in 1878, when a group of speleologists from Catalonia got lost in the labyrinths of Cuevas del Drach. Scientists found a way out of the caves only three days later and stunned the scientific community with the news about the wonders seen inside.The final point in the history of the discovery of the cave system was set by the French geographer Edouard Martel in 1896. Together with a team of professionals, he studied more than 1,200 meters of the interior of the caves and compiled the first map.
