According to expert research, Heishiding Nature Reserve is rich in a variety of orchids and is the main producing area of orchids in Guangdong. Almost all orchid varieties in China are available here. This is not only a treasure house of plants, but also a paradise for animals. There are more than 100 kinds of birds such as pheasants, more than 20 kinds of snakes and a variety of beasts. Mountain cattle, wild boars, southern deer, pangolins, hawk-billed turtles, etc. are sometimes seen in the forest streams. In addition, there are countless insects. The State Education Commission entrusted the Department of Biology of Sun Yat-sen University to set up the "Tropical and Subtropical Forest Ecological Experiment Station" here.
