Australia's World Peace Bell

Koala Town had a prisoner of war camp during World War II. In August 1944, more than 1,000 Japanese prisoners tried to escape from the prisoner of war camp, resulting in the death of 231 of them and four other Australians. After the war, Koala Town shook hands with Japan to make peace. The Australian World Peace Bell was built to commemorate the hard-won peace. On the street, a bronze bell hangs under a hexagonal pavilion. It is a replica of the big bell outside the United Nations Headquarters building, the only one in Australia.
